Hmm they shrunk the photo eye compared to my older controls.

They didn't shrink them. They are silicon eyes. The ones in your pic are cadmium eyes.

The IC at the left is 2903D is JRC 2903D a Dual Comparator.

It depends on how it was built, some PCs are snap together and can be pried open while some are screwed together, the hardest to open are those odd ones that used glue.

the one on the left appears to be screwed on while the one on the right looks to have a snap-on cover. A screw-on cover will have notches in the side like the one below while a snap-on cover will be smooth all around without those three grooves.

The one on the left is a DTL. DTL covers use screws. The one on the right is a Sun-Tech. It snaps together.
