Use them as a stop sign pole! Because ALTO is "Stop" in Spanish!
LilCinnamon   [Jan 17, 2010 at 06:38 PM]
That is where you are WRONG! Alto/Alta is High or Tall in spanish.
TiCoune66   [Jan 17, 2010 at 07:05 PM]
Probably for the "high" fail rate, hence ALTO. Wink
LilCinnamon   [Jan 17, 2010 at 07:07 PM]
Actually I think ALTO started with HPS. Since HIGH pressure Sodium... They got ALTO. They just added ALTO to florescent...
TiCoune66   [Jan 17, 2010 at 07:11 PM]
I think ALTO first started on F40CW fluorescents in '95, by that time HPS lamps were still non-ALTO.

GullWhiz   [Jan 22, 2010 at 05:08 AM]
Actually I have seen stop signs in Mexico...they say "ALTO" on them!

They started ALTO on fluorecent tubes around 1995-1996....the first HPS had ALTO in 1998....I have 1997 Philips HPS are they are NOT ALTO while I have a 1997 F40T12 that is labeled ALTO! In fact I have NOS 1998 HPS that actually does not have ALTO sleeve!
Silverliner14B   [Jan 22, 2010 at 08:58 AM]
ALTO means they stopped making good lamps hehe! Oh the first ALTOs were 34w Econ-o-watts in '95.
