A not so great repair job!
here is a AEL 327 on my company's building in Springfield. The door failed a few months ago breaking the lens. Someone decide to just place a new lens in it and tape it up thinking that 3M 33 black vinyl Tape would do the trick. Well looks like round two is about to happen. Good thing is I told building Maintence about it so Hopefully they will fixt it right.

Yeah, a 1000w MH is pretty bright too, it also warms up your room pretty fast. Laughing

And if you have some old drapes in your room and the lamp explodes, it'll keep your room nice and toasty until the fire department arrives. Laughing

*UPDATE* this fixture has been replaced with a brand new HPS AEL 327.

Hmm. LOL It's about time they got it right! Laughing

Cool that they finally fixed it, and with a new 327 too.

*UPDATE* The new 327 is already out and not working. This fixture has been nothing but trouble. Laughing

I am not sure, I'm currently working out of another district so I'm not able to see this fixture much. The last time I saw it was in February and it was still out.

I wonder if they managed to fix this yet.

how do hinges on streetlights manage to break anyway? it just seems like one of those parts that should be so simple & hard to screw up.

do the hinges need to be lubed up every so often?
streetlight98   [Jul 25, 2014 at 06:16 PM]
It depends. Some hinge designs are very poorly designed like the hinges on the GE M-250R1 for example. If you close the door and you're not very careful and gentle, one of the hinges can bind up and snap off, since cast aluminum is very brittle.

In this case though it looks like the latch is to blame though, not the hinges. i always thought the AE latch was kinda cheesey but I don't see more AE latch failures than I do with any other brand. Coopers and GEs have their share of lach failures too. The 90s-present M-250R2s seem to be the worst with loosing doors though I see M-400R2s and newer M-400s loose doors too.

I believe the early 2000s Coopers were also known for their bad hinges.

I wonder why they stopped making fixtures with door keepers. The Powerlites had either a clip or a screw at the hinge which keeps the door from popping out as easily.
streetlight98   [Jul 26, 2014 at 02:37 PM]
Yeah the pre-2004 coopers had bad hinges though I think the hinges on the OVC, S, and M were good, as I've never seen one with bad hinges.

Yeah AE/ITT and GE also had door keepers and I think Westinghouse lights had some sort of tab. I guess they figured if the door fell off, people would either have to buy a new door and lens or just replace the fixture. Neutral

Last time I checked, AEL still offers a hinge keeper.
streetlight98   [Jul 26, 2014 at 03:41 PM]
AEL offers a hingekeeper. I think it's a screw or something that you tighten to close the gap for the hinge to come off.
HPSM250R2   [Jul 26, 2014 at 03:50 PM]
Yeah I like the hinge keeper that is on my model 13. It's a metal clip thing. I'd still like to order a new AEL 327 but when I recently got a price on one, it was in the mid $800 range. I plan on trying to get one in the near future.
Form109   [Jul 29, 2014 at 10:30 PM]
the hinge keeper seems like a worth-it solution to possibly loosing a door.
streetlight98   [Jul 30, 2014 at 12:06 AM]
Yeah that way if the door pops open for whatever reason, just go up in the truck and shut it. Don't need a replacement door or a new fixture. I've seen my local electric company tape M-250R2 doors onto 113s before though lol Shocked
