Philips 330w Ceramic Metal Halide retrofit for 400w MH ballasts
Finally found one for just $25 on the bay and this INCLUDES FREE SHIPPING! These are expensive lamps, so this is a steal. What's unique about the Philips CMH Energy Advantage line is that they have AllStart technology allowing them to fire up on standard probe start ballasts without ignitors. I don't know how it works, there is no ignitor inside that I can find. Hope someone knows!

I found it will not easily start on a mercury vapor ballast, but I got it going with the help of a BBQ ignitor. It is very bright and has a pleasant color rendering. USA made too!

Nice lamp!

Is it brighter or about the same as a 400w QMH lamp?

I guess the arctube has an atmosphere giving the lamp a lower OCV, probably based on the same principle used in retrofit HPS lamps.

Nice catch dave, I did not think AllStart lamps would appear so soon on the bay! There is indeed no ignition device in the lamp, and as Vince guessed correctly, the trick consists in the use of a neon-argon penning mixture which ensures a reliable ignition at the OCV level of 400W MH CWA ballasts (for this 330W model). Philips also has a 205W model for 250W ballasts, and a 880W for 1000W MH ballast which provides with a huge improvement in color quality over standard quartz lamps in sport applications...

Thanks Max and Vince! I kinda knew it had something to do with the gas mixture as the arc tube contains KR85, but didn't think of the penning mix! I wonder if it is possible to refine this technology to fire up at the OCV level provided by a mercury vapor ballast? If mercury vapor lamps end up getting banned here, this lamp could easily fill the gap. Philips also has a 145w lamp for 175w ballasts.

Nice lamp! How much did this cost?

I would like a retrofit Metal Halide lamp for my HPS fixtures.. That would be nice I bet ebay has them!

I paid about $25 for this lamp on the fleabay, they normally cost $60! For the retrofit lamps I recommend you look for the Philips Retro-White (please note they make them in either vertical or horizontal operating versions) or the GE Chromafit CMHs.

a lamp that's normally 60 Bucks?...yikes lol.

I actually wanted one of these for my 250w MH ballast.....until I saw the price tag. Shocked
