Difficult to service, but it didn't deter wire thieves
On Mare Island by the bay in Northern California, these long out-of-use M400's are located in a swampy area that cannot be walked on. Yet, someone managed to remove the wiring from each & every one of these.

What were these used for?
Form109   [Jul 05, 2011 at 03:31 PM]
looks like at times the wood base would be partially submerged under water.
streetlight98   [Jul 05, 2011 at 05:38 PM]
also looks like the poles have those climbing pegs for servicing. Some utitiy poles in my grandparents' neghboorhood has those giant pegs in the wood. They were used before cherrypicker trucks. The pegs start about 10 feet up, the average ladder height.
Form109   [Jul 05, 2011 at 09:48 PM]
i don't think i'd climb that pole or lean on it.
joe_347V   [Jul 05, 2011 at 10:11 PM]
Maybe there was a boardwalk here?
Form109   [Jul 06, 2011 at 12:17 AM]
sounds probable...i can't just see those lights being there to light Mushy Grass.
streetlight98   [Jul 06, 2011 at 02:20 PM]
Actually, leaning on the pole gives me an idea.... Maybe a couple M-400s being saved...... I'm sure you could walk better with snow shoes.

I'll tell ya, Mare Island had a lot of mysteries. And many cool lights - more photos to come soon.
streetlight98   [Aug 09, 2011 at 04:08 PM]
Is it me or are there a few lightless poles (4th and 5th)
gailgrove   [Aug 09, 2011 at 04:19 PM]

streetlight98   [Aug 09, 2011 at 04:22 PM]
me too. Crying or Very sad It's only a matter of time before that happens to all of them.
joe_347V   [Aug 09, 2011 at 04:24 PM]
Yeah sooner of later they're all going to go there. Sad
streetlight98   [Aug 09, 2011 at 04:28 PM]
At least they'll still stay under water, it's not like they'll swimm away. they'll rot after a wile though. Sad
