That is the closest design to what I thought of in my head. Add a prismatic refractor, and you have exactly what I was thinking of for future LED streetlights (though I'd prefer HIDs to stay!)
gailgrove   [Mar 05, 2010 at 10:17 PM]
I would not really like to see any LEDs for street lighting and HID to stay too.
Medved   [Mar 16, 2010 at 08:29 PM]
It will or not light as much (low power) or fade soon (because overheating).
gailgrove   [Mar 16, 2010 at 08:32 PM]
It would like this, however I just set it in the cobra head for the picture Wink this is a 70 watt HPS. and yes I really dislike LEDs too.
Medved   [Mar 16, 2010 at 09:45 PM]
LED's themselves are not bad, but they should be used in proper designed fixtures with proper heatsinking. What mean flat lantern with LED's on the bottom and the body, shaped with fining on the top, should then serve as the heatsink. I know, such design look strange for many people here (judging about their comments), but i think it is only matter of tradition. Trying to keep "traditional look" would lead to troublesome b******s similar to CFL "incandescent retrofits"...

Agreed that Sticking to Conventional Designs for LED would lead to Trouble....as Cobraheads to me Were Made and Perfected for HID Lamps....as such...an LED Luminare will need to be created that makes an Optimum opperating enviroment for the LED's...also.....Such Language Medved!

In my opinion, I don't think LED is fit for streetlighting, I do think they're good for traffic lights though since they're more visible than those incandescent ones which are very difficult to see sometimes during the day especially if it's really sunny out.

@mercuryvapourrocks, I totaley agree Very Happy

LED's aren't bad you know, I agree with Medved, LED lighting isn't bad, you can get an LED as bright as a 400w HPS at like 100 or 150 watts.. or even less!

When you see an LED streetlight fixture, it looks ugly, but the reason is it has to look a certain way for it to last longer.

Also, lots of people don't even care for streetlights, (I mean people that aren't us) So pretty much if they create enough light and light the road well, It doesn't matter.

I would personally like to see LED Streetlights installed around Denver, there are none, all HPS. In fact I would like an LED Streetlight fixture myself.

LED's are not bad at all. I still prefer HID, but LEDs are getting better and better each day.
Form109   [Mar 17, 2010 at 02:10 AM]
where do they make LED Streetlights as Bright as 400 Watt HPS?...i Prefer Induction.
gailgrove   [Mar 17, 2010 at 02:40 AM]
I would like to know that too, I prefer CMH, but I would rather HPS, aleast its still HID.
Medved   [Mar 17, 2010 at 07:04 AM]
@Form 109 [induction]: I think induction is dead way. Their power coupling will never be as efficient as hot electrode concept, as they would always radiate copious amount of power as an electromagnetic field, what are at fist losses and as second troubles for radio communication (output from an efficient ballast would be very rich in harmonics, while filtering causes losses). And if you noticed, "classical" hot cathode concept fluorescent lamps appeared in the mean time with rated life 75+khours, what is the expected induction life as well. And fluorescent system would always cost far less...

@Form109 [language]: I'm sorry for it, i learned English only from it's use (method "jump to the water and try to survive"), so i'm not able to judge well, how much offensive some words are Embarrassed (hope you are referring to the now "starred" word, otherwise be more exact, please)
GullWhiz   [Mar 17, 2010 at 07:15 AM]
somehow this LED panel looks like it is meant for refractor design, not sure though....
joe_347V   [Mar 17, 2010 at 03:46 PM]
I kind of prefer HID to LED for streetlighting too. I kind of prefer them using MH or CMH lamps over HPS though.
A_lights   [Sep 02, 2010 at 04:42 PM]
I don't like the look of this retrofit as it looks sloppy

no way 100W 0f LEDs is going to replace a 400W hps
gailgrove   [Sep 02, 2010 at 09:10 PM]
Of coarse not I don't like the idea of using LEDs for street lighting either but its a cool panel to have Razz
Form109   [Sep 02, 2010 at 09:15 PM]
100 Watts of LED's Replacing 400 Watts of Sodium?...absolutely not.

i'll Take HPS over LED's anyday. Very Happy
joe_347V   [Sep 03, 2010 at 04:35 AM]
I wonder how this looks with a drop refractor installed instead of being FCO like most LED fixtures...
gailgrove   [Sep 03, 2010 at 11:35 AM]
Hmm, maybe I'll have to try that, with it lit Razz
@form109 yeah so would I Laughing

This LED Module looks like it would fit in my OV10! Idea How does the brightness differ from a 70w HPS?
