Odd-Shaped Philips Lamp!
Nope, this isn't the one I was talking about at my great-aunt's house. This one was found on the shelf in my grandpa's house (the one with the autobody shop) and i just had to ask him about it. Since he doesn't use 75w lamps, he let me keep this one and a 100w GE lamp.

This is a T19 lamp! This shape was created by Westinghouse in the late 50s. The last US Philips T19 lamps were made in 1997 or 1998 I think, and some may have been made as late as May 2003 in Canada.

This says CANADA on it. The etch can be seen in my other pic along with the date code. Smile

It's the "square bulb"!
I love those, I want a bunch someday!

They came back in 2008 as a halogen energy saver which used an infrared reflective coating on the inner capsule to redirect radiant heat back onto the filament so it took less electrical energy to heat up to operating temperature.

Home Depot carried two different wattages, a 40 watt which replaced a 60 and a 70 which replaced 100 for a little while but not many bought them (likely due to price as they charged about $8 for a pack of two) You may still find the 40 watt on clearance at some stores.

I've wanted one of these for a while. Glad to have one. Smile

I remember seeing these type of lamps back in the late 80's and early 90's.
TiCoune66   [Mar 27, 2012 at 10:32 PM]
I have a few T19 lamps myself in all wattages except 40W. I even have a 75W one if I remember! They're all Canadian Philips.
streetlight98   [Mar 27, 2012 at 11:00 PM]
Why were they made in such a unique shape?
TiCoune66   [Mar 27, 2012 at 11:07 PM]
I think it was a sort of space-saving design. Since the largest part of the bulb was made smaller in diameter they could fit in less roomy fixtures.
streetlight98   [Mar 27, 2012 at 11:11 PM]
The diameter of this looks to be about the same as a A19 lamp though. Doesn't the number mean the diameter (A19; T19)?
TiCoune66   [Mar 27, 2012 at 11:19 PM]
Yup. In that case I have no clue what this shape was for. I know Westinghouse's Eye-Saving bulbs line was mainly made in T19 shape, maybe it was their exclusive bulb shape.
streetlight98   [Mar 27, 2012 at 11:26 PM]
Maybe. I have yet to lay eyes on a Westinghouse verion though. Shocked I doubt any of my grandparents have light bulbs that old lol.
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Mar 27, 2012 at 11:46 PM]
You never know, maybe they will let you look through their stash if you ask politely, or offer them a modern bulb of the same wattage in trade
streetlight98   [Mar 28, 2012 at 01:23 AM]
Possibly... i have peeked throught their stash a few times before, but I've never asked for anything from it. He even has a T17 fluorescent fixture over his desk. Shocked those lamps are just about as wide as this one! 2" in diameter!

I have a two pack of 60w Philips I picked up NOS at a hardware store last year along with the 40 and 70w halogen energy savers.
Silverliner14B   [Mar 28, 2012 at 01:47 AM]
@mike and Vince, the T-19 shape is not a space saver design. It is designed for a broader light distribution onto the lampshades. Indeed it is a very nice shape, I have both Westy and Philips branded ones myself.
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Mar 28, 2012 at 01:48 AM]
Cool! Maybe many years (hopefully not for many more since they are perfectly good people) you will inherit all that stuff!
streetlight98   [Mar 28, 2012 at 01:59 AM]
@ Dave; hmm. Never would have guessed that lol. Did it actually work or was it just the intention of the shape?
@ Andy; maybe one day I could get some stuff! in the mean time i can still enjoy looking at the stuff and possibly get more pics. I generally don't bring my camera into other people's houses just for privacy reasons, but if I get their permission, I'll snap some shots. Smile
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Mar 28, 2012 at 02:02 AM]
Please do! I would love to see old 70s-ish packaging!
TiCoune66   [Mar 28, 2012 at 02:25 AM]
The T19 shape really does give a better light distribution? I never thought the shape would change it this much.
