GE M-250R1 Mounted for the Party
We're having some family over for ym 16th birthday this evening so I figured I'd test how much brighter the 175W MV is compared to the 100W MV. This is NOT staying out long, as it is NOS. I just want to see how much better 175W MV lights the yard (or if it's actually too bright).

I used the plastic lens from the HPS M-250R1 in this since i didn't want to add any unnecessary weight to my poor excuse for a light pole lol. This summer I'm going to install a better pole if i can get my hands on a 1-1/4" EMT bender... The PC is the same Ripley Sunswitch I had on the NEMA head. The lamp is a late 80s Sylvania 175W /DX BT28.

Happy Birthday Mike Cool Nice setup. Looks really good.

Thanks! My real birthday is Tuesday but we had family over today. The 175W is nice and bright! Funny thing is, even though this is simed way up, most of the light is still directly below it lol. With the drop lens removed (essentially FCO) the bright spot under the light is the same but the ligth doesn't cast as far.

You should try to get your hands on like a 30-foot pole to put that on. That would be cool and you wouldn't really have a bright spot right below it. Ask for a pole for your birthday next year Smile

I can't tell for sure if you're kidding or serious but nah I wouldn't want a 30ft pole right now because then I'd have no way to reach the light since I frequently change the light to spice things up a bit. I wouldn't have the bright spot but instead my neighbors would be going nuts lol.

I want to replace the wood fence post pole I made here and put up an EMT conduit pole (like the one in my bedroom) but I'll need to find a conduit bender for 1-1/4" EMT. They cost like 200 bucks new but i only need it once...

Well I was probably kidding about 50%. How tall do you plan on making it?
streetlight98   [May 04, 2014 at 03:12 PM]
LOL okay yeah when I get my own house I might install some poles. I'd like to anyways.

The new pole will be about the same height as this one. I like it about even with the deck rail. Maybe a little taller. The wood pole is 8ft from bottom to top. The mast arm is an other 3" taller. It's just out of my reach by like half a foot. A really tall person could probably open it. I can touch the light but i can't open it without getting a stick to poke the latch (or get a ladder and open it the right way lol)

Gosh I saw a merc on a 50 foot wood pole just around the corner from my Apt; last time I passed it however, it had been eaten by a sodium lamp! Crying or Very sad

There's also a few black painted merc fixtures at an old Post Office NE of my apt; they never fire them up anymore, since it has become a church. Guess it's against their religious beliefs or something? Shocked Laughing
streetlight98   [May 05, 2014 at 01:23 AM]
Yeah the remaining mercs are disappearing fast. Sad Where is this post office/church? If the lights are still there and still not used, maybe ask them if you can have them? I'd love to see pics of these lights. Do you have an address for them?

Just so, EMT conduit straight from the ground up is only inviting trouble. the steel is too thin to support weight before buckling. My advice is to either use a 6X6X20 foot fence post, bury it about four feet into the ground and get a proper luminaire mounting arm with at least one through bolt, or if you insist on steel, a 4" diameter tall fence post would work. In that case, you could either clamp the arm using threaded hardware, or again, at least one through bolt.

Yeah in the end I decided against EMT and decided to just mount the mark directly to the deck. I sistered another 4X4 to the deck post with some scrap 2X12 and then used a thru-bolt and two lags on the mounting arm. Nice and secure now.
