We don't use the octagonal arms for the traffic lights anymore. I only really see them on the Peel Region roads and some Municipal roads. @m@ have you noticed that they didn't put larger road signs on the Octagonal Traffic light poles? IIRC none seem to have them except for Williams parkway at Kennedy and Dixie
Well hmmmm, Brampton's octogogonal traffic arms seem be on regional roads slated to be widened or are nearing end of life, so them not having larger signs (ie large street signs) seems likely because they're holding off making signs for when a whole fresh set up is installed.
Yeah I always had that feeling too. The only ones left seem to really be on roads that are expected to be under construction in the coming time. I know gailgrove has a photo of Howden's B2255 and CGE signal replaced with the 125 and Fortran signal and the pole and the first round arm came in. Howden is a odd one because Williams got new signs Howden didn't, but there's no construction happening there. There were some on Central park 2-3 years ago at the intersection with the backplateless 8-8-8's. Holding onto the signs. Very likely
Agreed. Would you believe almost 10 years ago there was an environmental assessment for this run of Kennedy Rd specifically to improve the streetscape? Last spring, the illumination was slated to be replaced, but they never started the project . It will likely become tall concrete poles with OVF's now (unless they figure out an LED substitute). Sorry for spamming your post Joe.
I also rarely see new signal installs with concrete poles. I always suspected the few that are there were signals that got retrofitted on to existing streetlight poles.
They've never used street lights on traffic light poles here. I guess because the poles are too fat. Interesting how they use longer arms, though it makes sense because it'll light the intersection better.
Another thing I noticed is that the intersection poles are also taller (40ft) compared to regular streetlight poles which would also probably light the intersection better.
Yeah that R47 is way up there! After a certain height though the light starts to loose its effectiveness. I find 250W lights that are like 40ft up to be about as effective as a 100W light though with a larger area covered.
Hmm maybe the intersections have a scheduled routine group-maintenance so they're just waiting for that date? I know sometimes places have a contract where they relamp the fixtures every "X" years. Perhaps they do that at the intersections? Or do you notice spot-relamps?
I find its spot lamps around here and in joe_347v's area. Sometimes you see a bunch at an intersection get replaced. If they replaced them every x # of years there probably wouldn't be older fixtures at the intersections. Now that theres a conversion in place, now it is possible that they may be starting routines
Yeah I still don't know what's up with the lights on signal poles. Officially they're owned by York Region who I believe is still installing HPS on new poles but the City of Markham have sometimes randomly installed LEDs on poles marked York Region and even on City of Toronto poles lol. Not sure how often they relamp there but they seemed to be pretty well maintained.
Another oddity I noticed is that they kept the sidewalk lights on Bayview HPS. Odd cause the fixtures facing the street got LED'd.
Concrete poles are almost completely out for signals now. The last ones had to be the ugliest ones.
