Here is one of several Cooper OVL fixtures in a row near the new Port Mann Bridge,it's the first time I've seen the OVL used around here for streelighting.This group of OVL is installed amongst the usually installed GE M-400A3 FCO fixtures.
The OVL is a really nice looking fixture. Too bad it couldn't live up to the quality of the OV-50. i've heard horrible things about the ballasts in these things. The 327 seems to be a pretty decent fixture but i think the OVL look nicer. The older m-1000 and OV-50 are my favorite large sized cobras but i think i like the OV-50 slightly more...
Setup looks nice, I've yet to see a large fixture used here for streetlighting. The arms resemble the ten foot version of the MTO truss arm. The MTO arms are more angular though.
Yes, the setup looks nice,this stretch of freeway that was widened is the only area that now has truss arms installed,everything else around is davit. @ Mike,the largest fixtures I have are the Hubbell RLG and Sylvania Powerlite B2255, I wouldn't mind an OVL or OV-50.
Ahh, the MTO here recently started using truss arms in some installs (after a 20ish year absence) and they're a nice break from seeing the tapered e arms used everywhere else.
I wonder if the B2255 should be considered a medium or large fixture, it's refractor is one of the largest for a medium fixture and it also has a version that takes 1kW lamps. I guess medium-large would be it.
I'd say it could be a large sized fixture. Afterall, the M-1000 is just an M-400 with a deeper door and larger optical system. i'm pretty sure it's the same top housing (not 100% positive though). I wonder if a BT56 lamp would fit in my M-400 split door... I don't have a 1000W lamp to stick in it but there's plenty of room. The M-400A2 had the option for 750W HPS after the M-1000 was discontinued! Dave has a pic of one.
Yeah I'd say it is too. The B2255 needs some modifications to the socket mount in order to fit a 1kW lamp though .
The 1kW versions have the socket set into the housing while the 400 and 250w versions have the socket in the reflector on a bracket. BT-56 lamps don't fit even if the socket is adjusted all the way back (I tried )
I'm sure if you drill out the rivets holding the bracket in and mount the bracket backwards you might be able to convert a 400w B2255 to a 1kW B2255 though.
Ahh I see. My M-400 has the socket mounted inside the light instead of in the reflector but my M-250A has it mounted in the reflector. The M-400A uses the same socket mount as the M-250A and i think the M-400 split door and 70s M-250R use the same method too.
here in ft worth there's some construction on the I30 Freeway. there's some MH OVL's mounted on temporary wood poles. that's the only place I've seen them here,they certainly look nice at night but when the permenant lighting goes up it will certainly be HPS lol.
