NOS GE 175W /DX lamp from the ReStore (please date)
It's date code is 67 i guess.. the base has G5G inked on it as do some of the internal pieces.

Bought it at the ReStore for $3. along with an NOS Sylvania 400W /C lamp for $3.50. These were on a shelve marked as "handblown glass ornaments" lol The employees thought these were fake light bulbs for decorations lol.

July '85 for this lamp, cool find! By the way yes DX came out in the 60s, around '65-66. The /W and /C phosphors were made for a long time after the /DX phosphor came out. The last of the /Ws were made in '83 and the last /Cs were made in '89, both cases by Westinghouse/Philips.

Ahh thanks for all the information Dave! interesting that they continued to offer the other obsolete phosphor coatings.

Maybe they did since they offer different qualities of light? I've only seen /DX lit in person but I can tell you it's quite pinkish sometimes! From what I understand /C is kinda yellowish, especially when they start to dim out, and /W is kinda like 6500K daylight fluorescent.

I guess it's so they could still offer different colour temperatures to customers. I guess MH and lowering demand for non /DX phosphors slowly killed off the other phosphors.
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Jan 25, 2015 at 01:30 AM]
Probably did. I'd like to find a /W personally.
streetlight98   [Jan 25, 2015 at 02:37 AM]
Yeah I'd like to find a /W too and a lower wattage (100 or 175W) /C. I have a 400W /C lamp (and yep, you're right about them being slightly yellow) and it's NOS from 1967, so naturally I don't want to use it often! /C lamps have to be my favorite, even though I only have one lol. I have one /C, three clear mercs (one 100W, one 175W, and one 400W) and all my other mercs are /DX.

/W lamps have a pretty unique glow, slightly bluish green but still with a higher colour rendering than a clear merc. I have a 175w /W lamp. a couple of 400w /C lamps which are dead and a lot of /DX lamps lol.

Ah thanks Joe.
mercuryvaporrocks   [Jan 25, 2015 at 07:37 PM]
Awesome. I found the same lamps at Construction Junction back in 2006.
streetlight98   [Jan 25, 2015 at 07:50 PM]
Thanks! I heard the 80s GE mercs kinda sucked but it's NOS so it should still last a good while. Smile

I have two /A (Clear) 175w Philips ones that came with ElectriPak yardblasters (One of which I also have). I should go buy a couple Sylvania 175w/DXs while they're still made though. They'll be illegal to make after the end of next year, right?
streetlight98   [Jan 25, 2015 at 08:15 PM]
End of this year! After January 1, 2016 the lamps will no longer be manufactured. Sad They had decided against any further HID regulations but the MV ban is already in motion so it's not affected by the lastest decision to not set standards on HIDs. So we have less than one year to buy mercury vapor lamps!
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Jan 25, 2015 at 10:58 PM]
Oh wow, I guess I should go buy a couple cheap modern ones just to be sure, though NOS ones will probably be available on eBay and such for awhile...I mean, still buying 100w incandescents in 2015 isn't unheard of!
streetlight98   [Jan 25, 2015 at 11:39 PM]
Yeah MVs will still be available online on ebay and stuff but I'm sure people will change and arm-and-a-leg for them after the first year or two claiming they're "extremely rare and valuable". Rolling Eyes Laughing
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Jan 25, 2015 at 11:42 PM]
"Extremely rare handblown glass ornaments" Laughing I usually hear "That's a really big bulb" Laughing
streetlight98   [Jan 26, 2015 at 12:29 AM]
Yeah that's what they were selling this as at the ReStore. Handblown Glass ornaments- riiiiight... Laughing
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Jan 26, 2015 at 12:30 AM]
BUT it gave me a good laugh! Laughing
streetlight98   [Jan 26, 2015 at 12:54 AM]
lol yeah I laughed too. And both were NOS to boot! At first, I was expected the lamps were both used (and dead) and someone just donated them to the restore instead of recycling them but then I find out that I have an NOS Sylvania 400W /C from 1967 and an NOS GE 175W /DX from the 80s in my possession! Very Happy
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Jan 26, 2015 at 02:14 AM]
The 1967 /C especially is a nice find, especially for under $5!
streetlight98   [Jan 26, 2015 at 11:07 AM]
Totally!
