HO Troffer Opened Up (More :P)
Here's a shot of [url=http://www.galleryoflights.org/mb/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-13046]this[/url] with the ballast cover opened showing the two huge HO ballasts inside. I guess it's recessed quite far into the ceiling to fit the two HO ballasts. Note that the ballasts are actually above the lamps instead of beside the lamps under a U shaped cover like on most troffers.

Shot is a bit blurry...had to use my phone camera.

Hmm interesting troffer... i wonder if a low bay refractor or a M-400A crimefighter lens could be installed in it?

Yeah they're the first I've seen that use HO lamps too. The opening has a diameter of around 23" so I think a large low bay refractor might fit.

is this the same one as the ones at the subway? is the subway under rennovations? it appears there was a suspended ceiling of some type that was ripped out? those are pretty hefty ballasts. they look like GEs?
joe_347V   [Apr 04, 2013 at 11:01 PM]
Yep they are. I don't think this station is under renovations though, the subway here is underfunded Rolling Eyes and so there's sections of ceiling missing in some stations. This one also features a wonderful mismatched ceiling (and missing wall tiles in one part for the last 7 years) where they cut a hole in a drywall ceiling to run wiring and covered it back up with aluminium slats.

The subway here is filled with a lot of interesting lights though, including mercury Powerlite B2217s and B2215s, Unistyle 175s and 400s from the 60s. Old mid 50s preheat lights and troffers (since converted to T8 ), and some old preheat signs. Some stations still have some old 120v incandescent emergency lights too.

Yeah the ballasts are quite hefty and I think they are GE ballasts.

hmm. sounds like a pretty redneck building lol. have they done any relamping since you posted the last pics of these? do any of them have their difusers?
joe_347V   [Mar 09, 2014 at 06:10 AM]
Update: They replastered the ceiling and finally relamped the light. The reflector/ballast cover and the diffuser is still missing though. The ballasts are still the same CGE ballasts though. I noticed that one looks a bit toasty though.

I've seen the crews relamp the F32T8 lights but not the HO troffers. The subway here has some other interesting fixes too, including this fallen troffer (since fixed and the ceiling put back), recessed 50s Crouse Hinds incandescent step well lights with a piece of plastic screwed over the broken glass/missing door with a CFL inside, CFLs in vapour tight fixture (only a small number though), trains with flickering/out lights, trains with LED retrofit tubes. Razz

I thought you were going to say they replaced the fixtures. Nice that they kept them. Did they relamp all the lights or just this one?
joe_347V   [Mar 09, 2014 at 08:34 PM]
They replaced a few of the fixtures in the tunnel leading to the parking lot (they looked like these) with these. Both types of fixtures seem to have glass diffusers though as I saw both styles with shattered diffusers.

Anyway, there's still some HO troffers that could use a relamp in the area but I'm not sure if they're waiting for the construction in the station to finish before finishing off the relamping.
streetlight98   [Mar 09, 2014 at 09:28 PM]
At least they're still maintaining these. F24T12HO fixtures are rare. Ususally they're just used in signs and for other backlight stuff.

Forgot to update this, but they recently put the lens back up.
streetlight98   [Apr 24, 2014 at 03:03 PM]
Ahh I wonder if they kept the old one the whole time or if they got a new one...
joe_347V   [Apr 24, 2014 at 06:32 PM]
The fixture is original but I'm not sure if they replaced any of the ballasts, the CGE on the left looks a bit toasty. I think the CGEs are the original 1974 ballasts as I've seen other fixtures with replacement Advance and Sola ballasts.
