Highmast Pole Lowered for Service
This was also taken by my uncle's friend. He was working at a place in Providence on these IIRC. There was a bad ballast in one of the Holophanes that he had to replace. The one bad ballast caused the whole set to go dark. This is my favorite style highmast optical, though i like the older ones with the round paintcan style ballast compartment.

These things are basically modified highbays if you think about it. About the same size, they look similar, the only difference is that highmasts have a slipfitter and are weatherproof. That's his van in the background. E-150 or E-250?

they've apparently rolled out the first ever LED highmast...

Nice shot, and thanks for sharing and yeah highbays are basically the same design except these are weatherproof and probably more sturdy. The MTO has similar lights in use but the I-190 in Buffalo is filled with these deep refractor Holophanes.

I didn't know Holophane made a LED highmast too, at least theirs looks more like a traditional one. The MTO started trying out these in parts of Ontario and I have to say they look quite odd...

lol yeah they look odd. Laughing this is the only style i've seen used by RIDOT (these pole wasn't RIDOT owned though)

Heh, MTO used several types including the GEs, Widelites, Holophanes, and Quality Lighting. I think I saw a Cooper highmast once too.

I haven't seen the MTO use the Powerlite highmast though.

powerlite made highmasts? do you have a pic? i've probably seen them if you've posted them but i've forgotten what they look like lol.

Yep I do! but it might have gotten buried. Razz They're very rare as I've only seen them on private property and on MTQ (Quebec's MTO) freeways.

I saw the MassDOT changing ballast the other day in some of the highmast fixtures. It's pretty cool how they lower.
streetlight98   [May 01, 2013 at 01:59 AM]
yeah highmasts are awesome! I've always wanted to lower one and service it! Very Happy Heck, i'd love to go up in a bucket truck and relamp a fixture too! don't you just love the feeling of fixing something that doesn't work? whether it's fixing a street light or just screwing a new lamp in the fixture on your front porch. Cool
