Soon to Be Replaced AE 125s
Here's a pair of AE 125s that's scheduled for removal because of road widening. But looking at the poor condition of the old concrete pole it's bound to happen sooner or later. The old pole probably held a pair of B2213s back in the mercury days.

Ahh, I guess you saw those pics of clamshells and OV-25 remotes on the QEW in the early 80s then?
Hanging Light   [Jul 11, 2013 at 11:18 AM]
Yeup. The clamshells were replaced right before the Truss lights came in.
joe_347V   [Jul 11, 2013 at 07:56 PM]
Yeah I think it was done in conjunction with a HPS conversion. The clamshells aren't even the original lights on that stretch of the QEW. The original lights were incandescent gumballs on straight arms.
Hanging Light   [Jul 12, 2013 at 12:21 PM]
They were 12' poles right? There are poles from the Clamshell era but the pole was just restored with the same old arm and HPS lights. http://goo.gl/maps/6atCb

I believe the old double guys were 25-30ft tall which is short for freeways but I guess they didn't use tall poles in the 50s. The incandescent poles were probably also the same height too.
Hanging Light   [Jul 13, 2013 at 09:09 PM]
Those ones are the last poles of that lighting era.

The last Truss arm on a Hurontario St off ramp was removed this week. This arm is odd as it was so close to the municipal road offramp, it was assumed by the city and they put an OVX on it. Then this whole ramp was reconstructed as part of the highway widening project, but the Trussed OVX was still in proximity to the new ramp, and it remained (as a temporary light during the construction period). Highmasts replace it.

My place of work has a view of the whole junction, so I'm keepijg tabs on it. The contractor is also responsible for the new municipal highway overpass, and they relamped it with modern 400W OVX's on 50' poles (OVX's even on provincial off ramp signals!). Funny thing is when they installed the remainder of these poles this spring, they left them without luminaires. I'm betting the city told them to hold off since the city is converting to LED, but no 400W equivalents have been used in the city yet. So this overpass could be the first around Toronto to have the highest/brightest LED's!

If you go down Dixie at Eastgate parkway. Its going to be all LED up until Dundas. I think they are the STR-LWY-1S-HT's. They only have these on the hydropoles so far. New Concrete poles are lying on the ground. They are removing the aluminum median poles as well. Take a drive down there and you can witness dayburning LED's and the Mississauga's new lighting system. Laughing

Woah, thanks for that update Hanging. Yeah regarding Dixie, just swapping the lights on the 50' median poles to LED would likely not create the same light distribition, so makes sense they're putting new pole,s likely close together. I'm betting they're short poles though, as I haven't seen an LED replace a 400W HPS at the height of the poles on the median! I'm even more curious what lights will go on the new lonely poles on Hurontario over 401 now (intended to hold 400W HPS)!

What a non aesthetic light!

Oh wow, I think Mississauga is the only GTA city to actually change the poles when retrofitting medium wattage HPS to LED (Vaughan changed out the lumes but arterials and intersections are still HPS Markham has test section of arterial with LED). The LEDs don't have enough light throw and as wide a beam as the HPS dropped lens cobras they replaced so they had to change the poles to shorter and closer spaced ones to achieve the same distribution.

Personally I think changing everything is a waste of money especially if the LEDs turn out to be junk and they're forced to put HID back up again. Rolling Eyes

He told me the old CGE 8-8-8s are being removed too which makes me think Mississauga is moving away from 8-8-8 signals (they've been retrofitted to LED already) altogether. Well at least the ones at Cawthra/South Service Road and Dixie/Lakeshore won't be changed out yet.
m@   [Jul 14, 2013 at 07:56 PM]
I think they're trying justify changing the poles to suit LED on Dixie with these reasons: the existing being old, and the existing being run over often as they're on a thin median in the centre of the road. Not sure how the thousands of other high poles speced for HPS will be addressed! My idea was sawing them shorter as a lot of recently installed high poles are actually spaced closer together. A great example is in Brampton where a portion of the unique truss armed poles were replaced in 2004, the new taller poles are spaced closer together: http://goo.gl/maps/1T1Yr

Yea they have the signals on the lines and wooden poles currently at Eastgate and Burnhamthrope. Soon enough the other intersections will too. Yeah they aren't the 50 ft poles. they look no bigger than 30 ft. Did somebody report those 2 truss lights left at the 401 and 410? I just went by today and they are both gone Confused Sad
joe_347V   [Jul 15, 2013 at 03:10 AM]
Hmm, I thought the poles at Dixie were still relatively new since they only look to be 20 years old at most and I think most were installed in the last 90s anyways (which replaced some 60s Powerlite Davits if my memory is right...until recently there were still a few in the Dixie/Queensway area).

I also passed by the 401/403/410 area today and I noticed that the truss poles and the R47s they held were taken down. It would be funny if MTO was reading this thread and taking down all the missouts we find. Rolling Eyes

Anyway, I think FCO HPS need closer spaced poles too so they could always fall back to a York Region style install with 250w FCO HPS if the LEDs prove to be a dud.

Also if you guys are up for a drive, visit the new Cambridge service centre that recently opened, they have a couple of LED highmast poles lighting up the truck parking.
Hanging Light   [Jul 15, 2013 at 12:46 PM]
Yea most likely.

I know that was very strange! I bet they were reading this.
They are the same distance away as the aluminum and old concrete poles that are still there.

Il have to go by one day
Razz
m@   [Jul 19, 2013 at 05:27 AM]
One day I'll go south on Dixie too, out of the way though...
UPDATE: the remaining lumeless arms on Hurontario over the 401 have followed suit and are fitted with new 400W OVX's
Hanging Light   [Jul 19, 2013 at 12:01 PM]
I thought they would have used 400W AEL 125's. lol
joe_347V   [Jul 19, 2013 at 08:42 PM]
I think the Eglinton and 403 overpass seems to be getting AEL 125s. Razz
m@   [Jul 19, 2013 at 09:24 PM]
Hanging light, you think that because most major construction projects in Brampton would start a section in Cooper OVX, then come back and finish with AEL 125's, don't you! (or visa versa). And the trend continues with FCO (125's & OVF's).
Hanging Light   [Jul 20, 2013 at 12:28 AM]
@joe They are putting 125's there i've seen them so far only on one side. I wonder what they will do to the other side. @m@ It does except more and more projects I am seeing are using FCO OVF or 125 more often then OVX's now. I saw a line of new OVX's with the drop lens!
joe_347V   [Jul 20, 2013 at 03:26 AM]
@Hanging Light I'm guessing more 125s but it could be more OVXs.
