[Gone] Cobras Being Replaced
Here's a shot of some old truss and newer taper e armed cobras that are also being replaced as part of the freeway widening and interchange reconfiguration on Hwy.401. The truss armed poles should date to around the same time as the older highmasts in my other pic but they could be put in earlier.

As I have said before I kind of miss the old truss lights since this was one of the last freeway-freeway interachanges that still used the truss style lighting and that the arm style was pretty unique to Ontario

I find it funny how since it near the airport the high masts are so short Laughing
Form109   [Jul 19, 2010 at 02:01 AM]
i Think its Law for Roadway Lighting to be Short near Airports....so the Pilots don't Confuse the Roadway Lights for the Runway Lights.
gailgrove   [Jul 19, 2010 at 02:02 AM]
Yes it is, also so they dont get hit Shocked
Form109   [Jul 19, 2010 at 12:31 PM]
in Shreveport,Louisiana near the Airport the Cobraheads on Tall Poles suddenly turn into wallpack Fixtures on Short Poles.
gailgrove   [Jul 19, 2010 at 12:37 PM]
On other roads they use tiny 100 watt shoe boxes on 15 foot poles, those are right at the end of the runway!
Form109   [Jul 21, 2010 at 09:29 AM]
iv'e Never seen a Shoebox smaller than 250 Watts....most i see are 400 or 1 KW.
gailgrove   [Jul 21, 2010 at 01:30 PM]
Well there spaced very close together, they light the same roads that usually use 400 watt HPS cobras.
LilCinnamon   [Jul 21, 2010 at 06:15 PM]
That High mast isn't really high. Its shorter than the Poles with the cobraheads on them! xD
gailgrove   [Jul 21, 2010 at 06:17 PM]
Not really look at the poles in the background, the hight mast is about 60-70 feet tall, the shortest they get is 50 (kind of pointless) and they go up to 200 feet! I might try to get about a cobra head or two from this site, I would really like a M400R2 and M400A (the new style) both in 400 watt HPS (I might have to settle for 250) Very Happy
LilCinnamon   [Jul 21, 2010 at 06:35 PM]
I wouldn't mind an M-400A. Could you get one for me? =3

I just would like to save one of those truss arms in the background and maybe a smallish fixture.
gailgrove   [Jul 23, 2010 at 04:18 PM]
I'll be giving them a call on Monday to see what I can arrange Wink

Cool thanks Wink

OK update, I got through to them and.... the lights wont come down until January 2011 Shocked Rolling Eyes So we`ll see then.
UPDATE: Its now March or April Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes
SECOND UPDATE: And now its some time this year, I don't know when Rolling Eyes
joe_347V   [Jul 20, 2011 at 09:43 PM]
Yeah I went by these today and they're still up, although some more highmast lights have been put up.

I remember when they redid the lighting on the 427 they put up the highmasts in 05-06 but they left the old cobraheads and poles up until March 09 Rolling Eyes
streetlight98   [Jan 10, 2012 at 11:00 PM]
Hmm. Right near the airport runways we just don't have streetlights.
gailgrove   [Jan 10, 2012 at 11:45 PM]
They aren't that close here, it is about about a mile and a half until the runway starts from where this is. Here the poles at the end of runways are very short!
streetlight98   [Jan 11, 2012 at 12:13 AM]
Hmm. Since this is near an airport thoguh, you'd think they'd install cobraheads to replace highmasts instead of the other way around though. I don't really live to far away from T.F. Green Airport in Warwick. I'm close to everything in central RI. Surprised
joe_347V   [Sep 02, 2012 at 02:53 AM]
Update: these lights have also been removed, in fact there's only a couple "truss" type poles left standing in this interchange, both hold R47s IIRC. They started removing the lights on the ramps and overpasses earlier this year and now almost all the old poles are gone.

-----[11 Jan 2012 at 11:51]-----

Here's how we light our sections of freeway that are close to the runway.

Interestingly because of how close to the airport this section of freeway is, they swapped out out some of the original 40-50ft truss poles with shorter ones during the mid 90s...sometime around '96 if I remember correctly.
streetlight98   [Sep 02, 2012 at 03:12 AM]
All the older poles here were/are about 25ft tall. The newer davits for relay installations i'd guess to be around 30-35ft.I think the tall davits were started in the 80s here with 400W HPS Cooper OVM (M-400R2 for spot replacement). The older style short davits with the long arms were still used on the ramps though and lights were installed in the jersy barrier on the freeway. Now lights are installed along the right sholders. The poles today are around the same height as those from the 80s on the highway. The ramp poles are a tad shorter than the old style davits that were used here and the arm is much shorter (about 4ft). Ironically, new versions of the "old style" davits are still used to replace knockdowns. The truss arms used here in the 60s and 70s are still used for new installations and replacements for lights that have individual PCs (AKA they're owned by NGrid and leased to RIDOT).
