Lightolier Recessed Can
Restore find. I found the rough in frame and mounting bars (not pictured) at a Restore a couple weeks ago and I found the matching trim/reflector at a Restore today. It's factory 50w PSMH but I converted it for 75w MV by removing the ignitor. I converted it to to mock up what the merc cans at my school would be like if they were working. Granted the ones a my school would be a bit brighter since those are 100w. 75w MV seems to be less common.

The ballast is a bit interesting compared to other recessed cans instead of a F-can ballast like most recessed cans use it uses a regular core and coil ballast potted in epoxy.

Nice! I would like to find an HID recessed can. I think it would be cool to have a pair of 50W PSMH can lights over the front stoop or over the garage. I like can lights installed in the soffit along the side of a house. The grocery store I work at has recessed cans along the overhand that wraps around the front of the store and has more cans in the two entrance vestibules. They used to have R40 incandescents but had all LEDs installed at some point. The failed LEDs are being replaced with CFLs. Before LEDs and CFLs were a thing, they had installed some F32T8 wraps over some of the cans in the vestibules and delamped the cans they didn't cover. They also replaced the cans over the two entrance doors with a MH canopy light. When the put the LED bulbs in, the put the LEDs in the delamped vestibule cans too. those lights all run 24/7 too, though the canopy lights have button PCs on them.

I suppose the application of this would be limited, as you would need access to the ballast. So this would have to be installed in a room with an attic above it. That would work for the hallway, bathrooms, and bedrooms in my house but the kitchen/living room/dining room/staircase has no attic above it. I could install this in the laundry room I suppose, though it would look stupid with no ceiling at all lol.

Thanks! Yeah it would look pretty neat installed over the front door or even over the stairway inside for that matter. Of course if I was installing it inside I would probably reconnect the ignitor and use a 50w CMH instead. I'd imagine this ligth is pretty similar to the Ryerson cans I like to talk about too lol. The only difference is the trim, mine looks more modern with the silver aluminum trim compared to the black baffle and the wattage. Mine is 75w MV vs the 100w MV at school. I'd probably get another 75w MV lamp if I were to have this is regular use though. I only have a 75w Sylvania /DX from the early 2000s.

HID recessed cans are still quite common here. Even though I think newer installs are moving to LED. A lot of strip malls, malls and office buildings still use PSMH/CMH, HPS and even MV versions of these cans.

I'd imagine that it'd be preferred to have a attic for ballast access but I think you can service the ballast with the ceiling in, you have to pull out the can which is clipped in the frame and stick your hand in the hole and unclip the ballast from the junction box. The junction box is designed so that the ballast just clips in. The hole seems big enough for you to pull the ballast out although I'd imagine it'd be a PITA to service since you have to stick your hand in a 6 3/4" hole.

Ah I see, so service is possible. That's good. Smile Yeah the Rhode Island Mall had recessed can MVs inside but they're gutting the building as we speak so the red ceramic tile floor and recessed cans are going away. Crying or Very sad

Yeah, I'd guess it would be a major design flaw if you had to rip out the ceiling to replace a bad ballast. Laughing Too bad about the merc cans too, they used to be quite common here but MH, CFL and LED saw the end of a lot of them. Fortunately there's still a fair bit of recessed merc cans left in Toronto.

Awesome! hid cans are a hard thing to find here .I've changed a ballast kit on a 100W one before. usually F-can is the norm..the F can ballasts are better built and last longer
Some are impossible to replace if they have screws on the backside holding them In and the can is small..larger cans are easy to change ballast on even live if they have a connector and haven't been screwed up by someone

Thanks, this is the first time I've seen a HID can at Restore too. Normally most I see are the PL versions. I guess if the ballast fails in those smaller cans, it'd probably get converted to incnadescent lol.

Nice recessed can Joe!

Thanks! I also found a 80w merc at Restore which seems to fit the reflector better than the 75w merc I had earlier.

Use that lamp then

Update, I went back to the Restore where I got the rough in kit (basically the frame and ballast) and picked up the other one that was there. Now to find another matching trim/reflector assembly.

Update 2, I managed to find another Lightolier 1105CL trim that's identical to the one in the pic. Now I have two complete 50w PSMH/75w MV recessed cans.
