50w MH Bucket
Cheap find from Restore today. It's one of those Heath Zenith 50w MH buckets that have shown up at HD a couple of years ago. Unlike the Utilitech 50w MH yardlights, these have a open bottom refractor and so have a open rated socket.

Don't have any plans for this but I might remove the ignitor and replace the socket so I can run 75w mercs in it.

Nice! They make special open rated sockets for mogul base MH lamps but apparently the medium base open rated lamps use a regular socket. I gues maybe low wattage MH lamps aren't as likely to explode? But they're PSMH which makes be think they're more apt to explode. Vertical MH lamps usually don't blow up the outer envelope though. My Holophane highbays had pink open rated sockets installed but i boke the ceramic collar off around the center contact so regular lamps can be used lol.

Thanks! The open rated medium based sockets have a taller ceramic collar around the socket so that only lamps with a narrow glass stem can fit. The socket is the same as any other medium socket but the collar prevents HID lamps from fitting.

I haven't seen these at the Home Depot I work at. We have lots of Lithonia Lighting fixtures, especially HID's but I haven't seen this brand, even though I have seen this brand for other lights.

hmm that's interesting. My protected E17 Mh lamps are the same size as the unprotected ones as far as i know. I'll have to check the lamp necks. Pretty sure all mine are the standard shape.

I see the Restore here had one of these too, they wanted $60.00 for it and it didn't even include a lamp. Shocked

I wondered will mercs fit with a open rated socket?

I think they don't, the open rated MH lamps have a really narrow neck I haven't seen on any other HID lamp.
