Lightolier CMH Track Lights
Restore find, scored these guys for $3 each. Unlike my other CMH track lights, these use bi-pin CMH lamps instead of PAR 20 lamps.

Lamps are Sylvania 3000K 39w CMH lamps. Had to be careful not to touch the glass when pulling them out (I assume they have a quartz outer bulb like halogens). To change the lamp in these you have to loosen the two thumbscrews holding the front and the glass in, and then you have to remove the reflector which is held in by two smaller thumbscrews.

Ballasts are Vossloh-Schabwe electronic ballasts. They strike the lamp about a 1/2 second after being plugged in. Click here for the spec sheet.

Cool, I have seen such fixture at my local grocery store.

Yeah it seems most commerical places use these now instead of halogen PAR lamps. I also notice more and stores using LED too.

Yeah stored used to use MH track lights here (before that electronic PL, before that incandescent) but now everywhere is almost square fixtures with LEDs.

I used to see these in almost every commercial type of setting (Grocery stores, Malls, Even Wal-Marts) but now almost all stores are using LEDS for the purpose that the these Metal Halide track lights served
Stop and Shop has the square ones that Mike mentioned they are very glarey and but they are bright

Yeah those LED track lights at Stop & Shop are very glarey but they are very bright too! I'm actually really impressed by them. The light is warm. Like a halogen color. The T5 continuous baffled pendant lights at my local Stop & Shop are bright too and not glarey. They have some T5 troffers too. The troffer has a opal diffuser with a metal/solid plastic piece in the center.

I still see a lot of CMH track lights in use here, I guess places that put it the CMH track lights are a bit reluctant to switch over to LED now. I wonder what's the price difference between the two types, the CMH track lights can go for $200+ per hear O_o.

I also see halogen PAR tracklights with either LEDs or SBCMH lamps fitted too.

I finally found a use for these guys. I mounted them to a 2' piece of track, wired the track up to a cord and stuck the whole thing above my living room shelves. Makes for a pretty nice indirect light, like those 90s halogen torchieres except with less heat and power. Those halogens used upwards of 500w which was later derated down to 300w.

Sweet! You might want to stock up on a few bulbs since the way things are going, you might not be able to source lamps for much longer (and if you can, they'll probably be expensive).
joe_347V   [Feb 14, 2017 at 08:05 PM]
Yeah, I should. 39w CMH bulbs are around $40 locally or $25 online so maybe I'll stock on a couple spares. I should also get a few spares for my mini gumball too...it uses a similar bulb that costs around the same.

Currently in terms of bulbs I have:
2x 3000K G8.5 lightly used, currently in the fixtures right now
1x 3000K G13 bought new, has been used 3-4 hours per day for around half a year.
1x 4000K G13 bought new, has some slight use.

Ideally I would like to get at two sets of spares for all three types but at $25 a pop, I probably only get a spare for the ones I use often. Unless I see a bunch of NIB ones at Restore that is lol.

Wow never realized how expensive those miniature CMH lamps are! They cost nearly as much as the larger ones! What about the PSMH equivalents of those lamps? (Do they even make QMH lamps for track lighting?) I'm trying to stock up on 100 and 175W MV lamps with some 400W MVs too. I'll also stock up on any decently priced pre-2000 HPS lamps too in 50, 70, 100, 150, 250, and 400W and any cheap 175, 250, or 400W MH or 70, 100, 150, 320, or 400W PSMH lamps I find.

Currently, I have about a dozen NOS 100W /DX ED23.5 MVs and a case of 6 NOS 175W/DX MVs (as well as about a dozen used "expendable" 175W MVs in various brightnesses). I have about 8 or 9 400W MV lamps, all decently bright but many of those are rare/vintage so I shouldn't count those.

I have like half a dozen each of NOS 50, 100, 150, and 250W HPS lamps and have a few NOS 400W HPS and a couple NOS 70W HPS. I have several used HPS lamps too, including one 200W HPS Alto. Also have a bunch of 100 and 150W HPS medium base lamps that I'm trying to get rid of lol. The 100W HPS flood on my house takes medium base lamps but I'll probably only ever need one spare lamp for it as most. Don't have any medium base 150W HPS fixtures.

Not much in the way of MH. Three NOS 175W Sylvanias, one NOS and one used 250W Sylvania, a used Sylvania 400W MH, and a couple medium base PSMH lamps in 50, 70, and 100W.
