I didn't know they made a 950w probe start MH lamp.

me neither! what makes it use less wattage? i know the 360W SS lamps have heat reflective paint missing at one end which probably reduces the runing temp and so its never fully run up

The wattage can be changed by modifying the arc tube voltage. So a 360W lamp probably stabilizes at 115-120V once fully warmed up. The SS lamps you mentioned are probably restricted to base-up operation only. This allows the ceramic coating around the upper electrode to be omitted. Chances are it's only kept hot by natural heat convection.
