Electrolier 1XF40 art deco fixture.
For this first day of my 2013 dumpster diving season I've found something interesting!

This thing was lying on the ground next to metal pieces from an old cooking range and a baseboard heater. Interestingly it was connected using two individual wires, which still are in good shape and not brittle, so I saved those should I need to replace a wire inside an old fixture.

It's NPF, some tar has leaked but nothing serious. Plus it's still working fine, no ground fault whatsoever! The end plates have some sort of design on them, making it an "art-deco" era fixture! No starter came with it.

Neat, it looks like the end caps cover the sockets too.

oh nice! yeah the end caps will protect the sockets! but i suppose if it were to get dropped harfd enough the endcap itself would snap depending how strong it is. I know cast aluminum can be brittle sometimes if it's made cheaply. i bet the endcaps on this are as tough as an iron skillet though. Smile

I believe some later striplights like the 1960s Lithonias had end plates that covered the sockets too but they were plain sheet steel.

Since you said it was just wired with the two wires instead of with romex and BX I wonder if it was originally used with a K & T system.

yeah this one could be knob and tube originally! I don't think the ones from NECo that my grandpa has were though. the one in the basement may just have the ballast leads hanging out the top. They're kinda chunky to be ballast leads though. they look to be the ize of the line wires above but the color is much richer on the spare in the basement and the wires look like new.

an LG member somehow associated with the Central Falls RI Sylvania plant and those cool Macy's lights has a pic with the same style light in one of the plants he's been to.
