Inside of DIALIGHT.
This is the inside of a dialight LED panel.

It looks like the inside has the 12 LEDs in the back, like one incandescent lamp would shine. and the sides make it aim the light to the refractor, which makes the light brighter and hides the fact that it is LED. Makes the incandescent feel.

I was VERY surprised to find out it isn't like 2 or 3 big LED's but instead it is 12 small LEDs clustered in the middle to act like a real incandescent. So maybe that theory about the 3 small LEDs aren't true.. hm.

Now, I have seen everything! Cool
GullWhiz   [Aug 27, 2010 at 12:22 PM]
my 12 inch one has only 6 LEDs! And still BRIGHT!
Form109   [Aug 27, 2010 at 12:36 PM]
i thought it was 2 or 3 big led's too.
GullWhiz   [Aug 27, 2010 at 12:40 PM]
Maybe they come in different forms....remember MINE comes in 12 inch and only has 6 BIG LEDs
LilCinnamon   [Aug 27, 2010 at 01:11 PM]
That was my guess too. They have different models and the one I got has 12 small LEDS.

Looks familiar with our LED traffic lights. Such a signal should be produce similar pattern to our traffic lights. So perhaps we have these dialights but with different lens...
Most of the LEDs signals have just a LEDs array that is diffuse across the lens, so the LEDs are visible across the traffic signal.
However in our german LED traffic lights this isn't the case.
When viewing with any angle, they exhibits a similar patterns of the incandescent traffic lights but with a difference lens.
Also the LEDs are HPLEDs so this signal should be very bright when looking directly
So perhaps this is the signal used in ours german LED traffic lights. They are actually very bright, even in mid day.

our traffic light typically shines most of the light downwards in a liner shape...

COOL!!

So that's how these non-pixelated led modules look like? BTW that thing with 12 LEDs is from Lumileds and the 12 LEDs are called Luxeon I. 1w each.

@Jace - do your red led module look like this one here?
GullWhiz   [Aug 27, 2010 at 02:24 PM]
Similar....but the LEDs are put together differently...

Interesting... thanks for posting a pic of the insides of one of these, I've always wondered how the non-pixelated led modules looked like inside.

By the way how did you open yours up?
LilCinnamon   [Aug 28, 2010 at 05:51 AM]
I opened it by using a screwdriver, and I pried it open. I had to break a bit of it, but I can still have it be held on my the gasket perfectly.

They seemed to have tiny bit of drops of glue on the screwing area...although I didn't break anything...
