Scowl???
Form109   [May 27, 2011 at 01:50 AM]
nickname for the M400.
streetlight98   [May 27, 2011 at 10:44 PM]
How did it get this name?
joe_347V   [May 27, 2011 at 11:05 PM]
If you look at them from a certain angle they look a bit like they're scowling at you.
streetlight98   [May 28, 2011 at 12:19 AM]
Oh, I don't think that. I personally see the M-400 as a "friendly" light.
Form109   [May 28, 2011 at 06:51 PM]
apparently the name "scowl" originated from a streetlight nut jeff saltzman..he has a website though it appears it hasn't been updated in quite a few years, among scowl he has names for various other streetlight models.

i think the NYCstreetlights website has some names for some streetlights as well.

OK, I'll have to check that out. Thanks.
GullWhiz   [May 28, 2011 at 10:34 PM]
from a poll in other page....MOST lighting people see the GE M-400 (the old silver one and some late 60s grey ones) agreed they looked like they were SCOWLING at you (with its big refactor too!) but sometimes they get replacement refractors...and scowling is gone LOL such as those squarish 3rd party refractors made for those GE fixtures!
streetlight98   [May 30, 2011 at 01:11 AM]
Plenty of these M-400s at the abandoned rock point park in warwick.
joe_347V   [May 30, 2011 at 02:26 AM]
There's a small number of these scattered around Toronto but they've all been converted to HPS.
streetlight98   [May 30, 2011 at 01:33 PM]
They unfourtunaly don't convert lights here. They put up new ones.
Form109   [May 30, 2011 at 03:30 PM]
it'd be cool to see more old fixtures converted....a Steel Plant in Lone Star,Texas has Metal Halide,Mercury Vapor and HPS Silverliners, and Unistyles.
