What brand is the HX? Hmm weird. Any Advance ballast I've has is all wrapped up in paper so I can't tell on mine. Most good quality ballasts have copper windings though.

The ballast had some knicks where the spade connector got pushed against the windings, so I covered that up in an effort to stop shorting, Ina addition to replacing the spades. I noticed that the cheepese yardblaster ballast is wound neater than the good ol ITT ballast. When it woodsheds, I will prolly rewind it with Cu wire so it'll be brighter and more authentic. Confused

You can't rewind a ballast without a LOT of useless work and effort. I'd just leave it alone. The coils are essentially glued together.

it seems that ballast in a Regent yardblaster i had had aluminimum windings.....nice nema BTW...i LOVE tapered buckets~!!

Mike, it's all worth it to keep the all might Mercury vapor alive. Besides, it'll be a huge milestone in my career as a lighting enthusiast. Wink

OK well I would definitely start with a cheap Chinese HPS ballast or something before starting surgery on a MV ballast since if you mess up on the HPS ballast, it won't be a huge loss and you can make sure it doesn't happen when you do the Mv ballast. Would be cool to wind your own MV ballast but you don't want to destroy a MV ballast in the process. Better to learn/practice with a cheapy HPS ballast

I know that I should use the 200 Celsius wire but I'm still undecided on using the red class f varnish, since I can't find class h. Confused
Also, I know that I am going to cover the exposed parts of the core with electric tape while I'm winding so I don't accidentally scratch varnish off.

I've decided to just go for it and say screw it since the merc ballast has damaged enamel and I don't have much to lose.
