48,000 hour HPS lamp
Lamp date code says January 1999; lamp was original to a Lights of America HPS wall pack installed at my parents' home sometime in 2000. It burned steadily dusk-to-dawn until January 2012 when it started cycling. Based on an average of 12 hours a day (may be more than that because Seattle has many dark, overcast days and the photocontrol does switch the light on before many of the streetlights in the area), this lamp would have burned over 48,000 hours! Not bad for a single-arc tube HPS lamp!

Shocked They sure don't make em like to used to eh?

I'm also surprised that the electronic gear in the LOA fixture lasted for so long too, I heard that they tend to blow quickly.

Did they even have electronic ballasts back then?
GullWhiz   [Jan 16, 2012 at 05:05 PM]
Of course! Even electronic ballasts in general existed in the 80s for fluorescent and stuff although not yet common.....HID electronic ballasts came probably around mid to late 90s....

How did the 80s electronic ballast look like? Anything like this late 90s ballast?
GullWhiz   [Jan 16, 2012 at 08:51 PM]
pretty much like that, although I saw fluorescent 80s electronic ballast that were colored...the one I saw once was all blue... in fact I believe it was actually some kind of hybrid ballast...I believe I have a picture of it, I have to find it though...
