Very cool leaning davit poles on I-15
I-15 in San Diego County is full of these light poles. Most have either LPS or HPS full cutoffs. However look at the second pole in this pic, it still has its original GE M-1000 700w merc light from '77.

The Poles Intentionally Lean like that?...are they Designed like this?
Silverliner14B   [Jul 06, 2010 at 07:35 AM]
Yep designed purposely that way for aesthetics. They are still installing new ones on this freeway in reconstruction projects.

I've seen poles like that and they always make me nervous!

Tmcdllr: Are you referring to the ones on CA 237 in Milpitas? There is a stretch of them through the city.

Update everybody: I found that this interchange photographed above was completed and opened to the public in May 1978. All the leaning davit poles installed during '77-'79 originally had mercs.

i notice you put 310W HPS for the M400A3....i've heard they only use 310 Watts in Chicago and CA,how difficult would it be for a collector to come across such a lamp?
Silverliner14B   [Jan 15, 2011 at 07:11 AM]
I have a 310w HPS lamp its a Sylvania. Other places that use 310w lights are Washington State and Arizona.

but who makes 310 Watt HPS Lamps....and why the odd wattage?...why can't they just use 250 or 400.

UPDATE: sadly the M-1000 is no more. it fell victim to a knockdown. a new leaning davit pole with an ael 325 lies in its place. theres still one M1000 left at this interchange down this ramp.

Too bad it's gone. But I like how they used a matching pole though.

Just drove I-5 through Oregon and there are many M1000's still in use converted to 310HPS.

were the glare shields added to these lights and the OV-20s in other pics or were the lights installed with them?
joe_347V   [Jun 19, 2013 at 06:33 PM]
Good question, I know with the later lights like the shaded OV-25s here they seem to have been riveted on but I'm really sure about the OV-20s.

BTW, Devonte, the reason for 310W HPS lamps is that they're designed soley to replace 700W MV lamps on a lumens basis (they have comparable lumen ratings)

Interesting, I guess it's the same reason why they have a 200w HPS then.
