Ramp Meter Signals
Here's a shot of a pair of 8" signals used for ramp metering on the QEW's Toronto bound onramps in the Mississauga area. They're only used to control traffic entering the freeway during weekday mornings, otherwise they stay green. The ones in Denver Just turn completly off when not in use. And before it there is a Traffic signal coming up warning sign and below the sign it says "When flashing" and on the top there is a flashing amber signal head.

Also those signals are 12-8-8 inch signals and below the 12-8-8 there are red/green (No yellow) 8 inch signals with just two heads (top red and bottom green) together facing inward for people in the cars to see it clearly. I need a pic of one.

Cool, we also have a similar warning sign upstream of the onramp too, only ours says "Ramp Metered When Flashing" and has amber flashers above and below the sign.

I've occasionally seen regular 12-8-8s used in place of the 8" signals but the 8" heads are more common, some also have 3M adapters on them too.

The setup in your area sounds interesting and I would like to see a pic of them.

Thanks, and interesting highway lights too, they look like a cross between highmast and conventional lights.

This part of I-25 has been redone over the years... They widened it because of traffic and added a high mast thing. After Santa Fe Drive (US 85) though.. The high-masts end and it turns to lots of trusses and Upsweeps and Double guy arms. With a mixture of HPS fixtures on them. Not a single MV though.

Metering signals have quite the sophisticated detector algorithm consisting of long loops and queue assignements......in other words. Fancy detector features to detect the amount of vehicles per lane.

Downtown Detroit pulled its Metering system out about 10 years ago. It never worked to my knowledge. The signals were there, but the system wasn't in place. All the heads were R/G 8" Eagle plastic.

I can set up metering features on my controller

That was tried here, with enforcement via camera, but there were too many complaints, and of course the camera was shot out.

I'm wonder how well this actually works too, there is nothing stopping you from driving onto the highway anyways.

Yeah, I also wonder how well this setup works too, this is the only freeway here with ramp metering.

Every freeway in Denver has Metering.. Well I-25 and 470 have it. I think 70 does too and 225.. Pretty much them all have them on pretty much every exit.

In CA we have them too, at the freeway entrance a flashing sign "METER ON" displayed in white (LED) lettering. On most of the signal poles are a RYG in 8 or 12" on top and a RG in 8" at driver's view, lower. Now they are installing "Tattle-tale" red lights on the back side so cops can see if you run the red and of course write a big fat ticket to take your money for this victimless "crime" rather than go after real criminals. I post a pic of one of our meter signals when I get a chance.

These are all being replaced with 12-12-12's

Yeah I noticed MTO went by the QEW and replaced all the 8-8-8 and 12-8-8 ramp meter signals with 12-12-12s. These 8-8-8s were pretty recent too, I think they're only 6 years old max.
