CGE Signal - LED Retrofit
Here's a shot of the Philips clear LED lamps I'm currently using in the red and green sections of my CGE signal. The amber section still uses a incandescent since it's on for a short time compared to the other two lights. I chose the clear "incandescent sparkle" LEDs since incandescent signal lenses look dull if used with a frosted LED bulb. This clear LED bulb seems to do the trick though. The colour is similar to what it would look like if used with a conventional incandescent. Real signal bulbs have a yellowish tinge to them so the greens don't look as blue if real signal bulbs are used.

Yeah, it does Razz if you run your signal frequently these are great since they don't run any where near as hot as a incandescent so your room dosen't heat up and plus the lenses (if plastic) and gaskets will last longer since they're not getting toasted. I'm not sure how well they work with 12" lights though.

I like this! In a photo I could have easily assumed this was a clear 40w appliance bulb if there was less of a description. So yeah, it looks like the real thing.
I wonder how green would look with a "daylight" LED? Or red/green/yellow ones? (or even colored CFLs). Granted, the latter might not do well if it's cycling through on a controller...

Yeah, I resisted converting this light to LED for years since I could never find a LED bulb that had a close resemblance to incandescent until now. Since this is my most frequently used signal I converted it to LED to save energy. The only way you can tell it's not a real incandescent is if you look closely at the lens and also the lights look very LED change. By that I mean they don't have the fade out that the old signal incandescents had.

I actually have a daylight LED at home so I might give that a try too. I suppose the green will look blue, amber will look more or less the same and red might look pinkish or purplish.

Yeah even though I have relays switching the lights, the frequently on/offs and the sealed environment will make short life of any CFL.

Yeah, too bad LED technology wasn't where it is now back in 2003 and the fact that these probably aren't outdoor rated when the GTA decided to convert to LED signals or otherwise they would have have something like these in the old CGEs.

Also these aren't rated for traffic control use, so they're technically illegal to use in traffic signals, but of course fine for personal use and look more inconspicuous.

Yeah, real signal LEDs are probably more durable and conform to ITE standards so they're legal for street use. I believe official screw in LEDs were made at one point though.

Update: The LED filament bulbs look a lot more like incandescent compared to these. I bought one of testing in this signal recently.
