Incandescent Emergency Light 
In the sections of the subway built between 1954 and 1968, these incandescent emergency lights were commonly used to light platforms. Unlike most emergency lights, these stayed on at all times for some reason. 

Most were disconnected or delamped when T8 came in since the adjacent fixture was retrofitted with a emergency ballast. This one still sports a 116w signal bulb but the matching rounded glass cover has been removed. Note the odd looking blocky socket and the heat damage from 50 years of almost continuous 24/7 operation. 

These fixtures are also custom made for the subway too as I've yet to see them in use anywhere else.

Interestingly, I recently started referring these lights as TTC Half Pipers since their diffusers sorta resemble a half piper lol. Razz

I don't know why most emergency lights are incandescent its puzzled me for ages.

I think it's because most emergency light systems run on DC which would require inverter ballasts to run fluorescents which would add to the cost. LEDs would be easier to drive but until recently high power LEDs were really expensive.

These were installed in 1963 and ran off a 120v DC battery bank in the station which is why they are incandescent.

I guess they just forgot about this light or they didn't see a problem with leaving one there

Well, the station platform in semi-abandoned so I guess they might have forgotten about it. The fluorescents did get retrofitted to T8 though.

I believe Castle Frank, and Eglinton still has some of these lit up.

EDIT: College and King also have working ones on the mezzanine.

Im not too sure but I think the woodbine station lights are T8. I haven't used the subway at castle frank I want to see all the lights it sounds like they have a lot of old fixtrues and such there. Cool

Woodbine station also has a bunch of B2217s in the bus terminal and the Valu-Mart next to it has B2213s and B2215s on MTO truss arms. Cool

I'm not sure but I think they were popular for parking lots sometime in the 60s and 70s. I know of a strip mall in St. Catherines with truss, and a few more.

I know of a parking lot with a B2213 on a truss arm at renforth and the 427. Who knows they may have bought them off MTO

Aside from being able to run on DC, it may also have provided a warmer appearance to counter the CW of the fluorescents.

Probably, I wish I still remember how the stations looked when they were still in widespread use as most of them died out during the T8 conversion.

I know of some still in use but they seen to have purposely covered up the fixtures with sticky vinyl. They are still powered as I see the lamp faintly glowing through the vinyl.
