Ignitor Disable Switch
Added a ignitor disable switch so I could run both 100w MV and 70w PSMH lamps in my R47 without rewiring the ballast. The 100W MV setting disables the ignitor while the 70w PSMH setting enables the ignitor.

Ignitor Disable Switch

I have a feeling he made that himself. Cut a piece of aluminum and drilled it
TiCoune66   [Dec 27, 2011 at 02:02 AM]
Clever! Even simply disconnecting the neutral will completely disable the ignitor?
joe_347V   [Dec 27, 2011 at 02:10 AM]
@Vince Thanks! After some quick tests it looks like disconnecting the neutral disables the ignitor, a MH won't start.

@Mike and Aaron yep I did make the bracket myself it's from those aluminium strips you get at the hardware store, and the switch is one of those 120v toggle switches.

Cool. Since I'm guessing you made those " 100w MV" and "70w PSMH" tags, maybe you could use your skills to come up with Sylvania Powerlite tags for the ballast and cap. Idea

They should be Sola Canada tags instead, that's what Sylvania Powerlite fixtures used at the time. Razz

Cool!

I like it!! I was going to do this a while back on my AE-13 from Jace but never got around to it. It has a 100w MH ballast just wired for MV right now.
streetlight98   [Dec 27, 2011 at 03:29 AM]
Hmm. I'm pretty sure a 100w PSMH ballast overdrives a 100w merc, so be careful... A 70w psmh ballast seems to run 100w mercs fine though.
don   [Dec 27, 2011 at 03:37 AM]
A 100w PSMH ballast will overdrive a 100w MV slightly...like many 100w MV ballasts do as well. I've actually run one for 3 years everyday at work on a 100w GE MV lamp and has only normal wear. The 70w PSMH will underdrive the MV slightly...90-95 watts depending on the ballast tolerance. I would guess that slightly underdriving is better than slightly overdriving though. Wink

Thanks, I imagine the 100w MH ballast would be a good match for that 125w merc lamp I have lying around.

One question, with that corner of the ballast and the bolt sticking out like that, how are you able to close the lower housing completely?
joe_347V   [Dec 28, 2011 at 02:54 AM]
That's not the edge of the housing, the actual edge can be seen here I framed it out of the shot when taking the pic to highlight the subject of this shot.

BTW the door operates freely and is not obstructed.

This PDF should be helpful in disabling your ignitor.
GullWhiz   [Dec 28, 2011 at 02:40 PM]
Great job! You have done it! And you also did it in a neat manner too!
joe_347V   [Dec 28, 2011 at 05:38 PM]
That was the same PDF I used but I did it so that I can re enable it with a switch.

And thanks Jace. Razz

Beautifully done! I thought about doing this on one of my ballasts...now I have something to model it after.
joe_347V   [Jan 02, 2012 at 03:40 AM]
Thanks, after I swapped out the original ballast the fixture looked empty inside so I added the switch.

Very professional set up, Impressive!
