70 watt PSMH light
This lights my deck and backyard- very well. Got this at Lowe's in early 2010 and it was installed in fall of 2010. The ignitor takes a while to start the lamp, but it lights even on the coldest winter days. The lamp is a TCP coated and protected PSMH lamp. Some of the hardware is rusty and i plan to either replace it ro sand it down and paint it so ti won't rust again. The vents on the bottom let in snow though, but I just run the lamp and the snow melts out the vents again. This is well built for outsourced junk from Lowe's.

I thought these fixtures were a nice design and would've liked them for my home if they had a lower-wattage lamp in them, and the photocontrol was in a place where it actually see light under an overhang. That, and a better-quality ballast. I'm not sure Lowe's they stopped selling the 50w version - I thought it was about right for such a small fixture.

They only sell the 70 watt PSMH since before I bought this. 70 watts is perfect for my yard. I just wish this didn't throw SO much light sideways and that the photocell was stronger. We don't really use the PC anyways. This is operated by a switch and is only used when we need it.

I saw the 50W version at Lowes for a while, didn't buy it tho

The orange box here sells a 50w MH fixture, but it's a mini bucket instead.

@ Joe; hmm. Looks similar to my old Cooper HPS light that Niall now has.
The only complaint I have about this is that the nuts on top and the screws are all starting to rust out. I'm thinking of replacing them soon before they get too rusted to remove.
A_lights   [Jun 12, 2012 at 08:48 PM]
yeah probably a good idea and use brass or stainless steel bolts and nuts
joe_347V   [Jun 12, 2012 at 09:35 PM]
+1 for the stainless steel or brass screws, my traffic light came with steel screws and they were a pain to get out after years of rust. Had to break out the heat gun and PB blaster trick for some of the more stubborn ones.

Where can I get hardware to match this set though? The nuts on the top are closed on the ends (not open like they are normally). The nuts on top were origioanlly painted, but it got scratched off when I used the pliers to unscrew them (they were too tight to do it by hand).

Hmm, I think orange box or pointed blue box should sell them, oh and those closed end nuts are called acorn nuts xP.

Ahh thanks. I have a Lowe's giftcard so i'll try there first when i get the chance.

Remove the ignitor, and you should be able to run a 100w MV lamp Cool
streetlight98   [Jun 13, 2012 at 10:22 PM]
I'd have to get a medium base one since a mogul base one wont fit. The lamp in it is about a millimeter away from touching the metal plate on the bottom of the refractor.
joe_347V   [Jun 14, 2012 at 05:58 PM]
I thought the medium ones were easier to find at the box stores anyways. Razz Over here only Lowe's sells 100w MV lamps though.
streetlight98   [Jun 15, 2012 at 02:01 AM]
they sell 80W merc lamps here but no 100W ones. I've never seen a 100W merc lamp in person before- mogul or medium base.
joe_347V   [Jun 15, 2012 at 02:17 AM]
Interesting, over here we have both the 80w Feit and 100w Sylvania at Lowe's. I think orange box might sell 100w mercs though.
streetlight98   [Jun 15, 2012 at 02:39 AM]
Yeah only coated feit 80W and clear and coated Sylvania 175W here for mercs at the lowe's stores around here.
joe_347V   [Jun 15, 2012 at 03:25 AM]
Interesting, our Lowe's stores sell a coated (actually diffused) Feit 80w, coated Sylvania 100, 175, and 400 watters, and clear Sylvania 175w.
MercuryVapor175   [Jun 15, 2012 at 07:43 PM]
Is the 80w deluxe coated or just diffused? It would be cool to see a diffused MV spectrum! Laughing
streetlight98   [Jun 16, 2012 at 10:17 PM]
UPDATE: I was mistaken, they do have 100W medium based /DX mercs; I bought one today when I was getting new screws to replace the existing ones. They didn;t have acorn nuts, so I got stainless standard nuts instead. These screws were a main to replace becuase they were metric and they weren't standard lengths. It looks like the screws in this were either cusom ordered or were heated up and sliced shorter to fit the fixture's threads. Rolling Eyes The screws I bought aren't exact matches to the origional ones, but they fit and they won't rust. They're all zinc except for the nuts, which are stainless steel.
joe_347V   [Jun 16, 2012 at 11:32 PM]
Yeah my Heath Zenith blaster came with metric screws, somewhat harder to find here in Canada too even though most of our products are in metric anyways.
