Hmm is that some sort of wire entrance on the top of the pole? It's sure not a ballast can...

I wish I knew.

The ground wire isn't even connected, it's just hanging there. Rolling Eyes

I don't think many street lights (on wood poles at least) are grounded since there is only two hots and a nuetral usually.

Michael is actually partly correct!!!!!

In matter of fact the post top in front of my house has a fiberglass pole, and when it got hit and they had to replace it, I was watching 2 linemen replace the pole, and I checked the wiring...a 2 wire UF ROMEX! One hot and one neutral, NO copper wire at all, I asked about this, they said there was no metal pole and the pole was fiberglass and that it was not needed due to being up high.....and yes many wooden poles streetlights are not grounded either....although there may be some exceptions.....

So even some streetlights from underground wiring isn't grounded....

I think most metal poles are grounded though since I've read catalogs for them that mention a ground lug provision.

We have started grounding our Mounting Brackets on wooden poles to the system neutral.

NGrid may do that. I'm not sure though. I've never seen one of their jobs up close before. I know there's a white wire and a black wire that feed through the mast arm though but no green.

@Tony, interesting that you mentioned that, I recently noticed that on some ComEd lights as well.

I believe most concrete poles here have a grounding lug inside which also grounds the rebar too.

After reading this, I double-checked with the pole in front of my house and there is indeed a ground wire running up the side of the pole that connects to one of the tapered elliptical lags, the transformer, the pole cable (I believe to keep the pole from leaning toward the road) and oddly enough, it connects to the bracket that holds the main 120/120/nuetral line. I've never noticed it until i looked for it. There's a stake in the ground right up against the pole that the other end of the wire connects to.

BTW; anyone else feeling the heat? It was about 94*F yesterday and it was two degrees short of 100*F today. Tomorrow is expected to be in the mid-90s with thunder storms in the afternoon. Seems more like southern weather to me. I had no problem with the low 70s temperatures we were having last week and before. Laughing

Yep it was 34 C/93 F here yesterday, it got cooler by a few degree this morning but it didn't really cool down until the thunderstorm we had during the evening.
