Repaired solar lantern
I found this thing sitting over tons of scrap metal at the recycling centre. I expected to get the usual white lantern but I ended up getting one of those older amber ones! The head was slightly bent and the battery compartment was busted. I basically unbent the head and installed two NiCd rechargable cells taped together. This homemade battery pack sits loose inside the fixture. It's been in service in front of my shed for almost a month now and the battery pack still provides lots of juice to the LEDs at morning!

I remember these amber solar lanterns I saw when I was a kid, and this particular one brings me some nostalgia LOL.

They give a cool decorative touch, but won't light anything, they're just too dim LOL.

They work pretty good to make the outline of walkways, but I rarely see the amber ones still in use...looks nice.

Yeah, amber solar lights were popular a dozen years ago because white LEDs were still pretty expensive. But since their price went way down in the last years, they're the most popular in solar lights. Amber models are still sold, but they're scrarce.

I used to buy solar landscape lights all the time and install them. I mostly bought the cheap 2-tier plastic Intermatic solar lights with a amber LED. They were like 4 dollars each. I have a few cases full of low voltage light sets I special ordered at a Do It Best hardware store that im not using. Im saving them for future use.

I used to have a solar lantern made out of copper that lasted for 6 years.

I have a bunch of those mini Wetinghouse solar lights. I take them in around Thanksgiving for the winter and they go back out around Easter. I may put them out earlier if this mild winter continues.

I don't have any, but I want to get some ....what's the best brand in terms of light output and durability ?
streetlight98   [Feb 19, 2012 at 03:12 PM]
I haven't tried any others beside Westinghouse. Westinghouse is great in terms of light output, but unless it's in the sun all day the will start blinking after about 3 hours. I get around that by buying a plug in battery recharger and changing out the battery for a fresh one when the solar pad on the light can't keep up with the LED.

Seems good then , although kinda a hassle always charging the batteries because the solar cells don't recharge them much
streetlight98   [Feb 19, 2012 at 03:25 PM]
A little hassle. Once a month or every two months. After about Halloween they don't hold a charge at all becuase of not enought sun so that's why I bring them inside and remove the batteries and spider webs and give them a good wash.

Be sure to dry them right after washign though becuase they rust FAST. That's another reason why I bring them inside in the winter becuase the snow will rust the circut board inside it to nothing. Shocked

Thats one reason why i like low voltage landscape lighting better. As long as you have electricity, you got light. Solar lights can be unpredictable. I have installed a row of solar lights in front of our house a few times before, and they don't charge all the way when they are under a bush cause not enough sunlight gets to them. When i stopped buying solar lights and switched to low voltage, i didn't have that problem.
