Appleton Baymaster C high bay fixture from school!
This is a cool 1980s high bay fixture. My former elementary school has (at least a few left) similar fixtures. Although this particular fixture came from our workshop at the school I currently attend. It used to be a gym, hence the wire guard. These Appleton fixtures replaced the (probably) MV high bays in most schools of the area in the late 80s. In my school, they were still giving non-specialized classes (French, Maths, Chemistry, etc.) by that time, so there was a gym. 5 or 6 years ago they stopped non-specialized classes, so the Electricity department requested the gym to convert it into a 2nd workshop, much bigger with enough room to give 4 classes to 4 different groups at the same time (1 in 3-phase transformers, 1 in service masts, 1 in heating systems and 1 in lighting systems), although it never happens! Since the conversion there's no need for fixtures with wire guards anymore.

The old high bays, which were the first generation of MH fixtures, are changed as they stop working. This particular specimen still worked though, it was replaced due to a very noisy ballast. Since the latter is 347V only, I removed it and will use the fixture with incandescents. I still remember the high bays in my former elementary school, they had wireguards as well, minus the central removable part.

Nice Very Happy, couldn't the ballast just of been replaced instead of the fixture?

It could. But the newer fixtures are Cooper Steelers. They are open and have more efficient reflectors. And anyway I think they simply won't replace any ballasts. If it shorts out, the whole fixtures goes. But since none of the newer fixtures failed so far, I don't know if they would still replace the entire fixture. My Sylvania GTE high bay head came from another school in my area and the ballast was burnt. Ironically both fixtures had the very same model of ballasts!

I mainly saved the fixture because it was a memory laner to me. I grew up with those at the elementary school! Otherwise this fixture would lay in the scrap metal bin as I type this...

Nice, I don't see a lot of older highbays here anymore.
