This is a COMMON sight in schools!
For those of us who went to elementary/primary and high/secondary school in the 1990s and 2000s, the high bays you knew are probably the first generation of metal halide high bay fixtures. Those of that era had protective wire guards. If you visit public schools throughout Québec, you'll see that most of them have them.

In my former primary school, high bays look exactly like the one pictured, without the central removable part. I never knew why they would leave the high bays open, thus non-compliant. But this setup would let shuttlecocks get into the reflector, but often would get stuck between two rings of the guard! It's exactly what you see on the pic, plus a paper ball XD

I remember when we would run out of shuttlecocks at school... because they were all stuck in the high bays XP

My elementary school had GE MH acrylic or glass highbays with a flat protective glass. My Middle school had Lithonia lowbays from the 80's or so and some aluminaum highbay replacements that looked similar to the one above. All of Cranston's public schools have motion sensor 6 lamp fluorescent highbays now. They appear to be Coopers. they work very well. i find Cooper Fluorescent stuff to be pretty good quality. Those aren't as interesting as the HID lighting though. i remamber last year when there was HID, the lamps would gradually turn pink, then a halogen color, then after about a month or so it would die completly. One of the 36 low/high bays had a clear merc lamp in it. it was noticable dimmer and had a MV arctube. All the others were MH lamps though.

LOL, we don't have highbays in public school gyms here, it is and always has been fluorescent.

Yep my elementary and high school also used rows of fluorescent fixtures like this in the gyms.

[oct 8 '11]My current school, has the Cooper F-Bay HBI.

[3/27/12] @ Vince; so those things are called shuttlecocks? We always called them birdies. Shocked Laughing

Well in Québec we usually call them "sparrows" (or rather "moineaux" in French LOL).

Ahh. I actually thought "birdy" was the real name for it. Shocked Laughing Then again, the shopping cart is called a "carriage" by everyone around here that I know. Razz
