HPS in Series
Here's a couple of identical GE 35w HPS lamps being run as a series pair on a 70w MH ballast. Unlike a 70w HPS ballast, a 70w MH ballast has a high enough OCV to run two HPS lamps in series.

A 35w HPS usually runs at 52V @ 0.83A while I believe the 70w MH runs at around ~90V @.80-.90A. Since the current stays the same when running things in series, and the voltage when the load is identical, will be divided by the number of loads (in this case two); I believe wiring two 35w HPS lamps in series on a MH ballast will more of less run them at same current and voltage they were designed for. Oh and the HPS on the left dosen't actually have a crack on it, it's actually a defect in the glass.

Here's the wiring diagram:

Disclaimer: since I don't have a clamp meter, I can't measure exactly the current at the ballast output. Also since this setup has been untested so far, I nor GoL is not responsible for any problems or damage that might occur when running lamps on this setup. Well if you blow a few Altos out, I think everyone here will appreciate it. xD

Wow cool! Will have to get myself another 35W alto HPS Then to try this out Cool

I have done this with two 150 watt HPS and a 400 watt HPS ballast! Worked! Same for two 100 watt HPS and one 250 watt HPS ballast

I've always wanted to try this but never have. However....what happens during hot restrike...or if one lamp cycles?
streetlight98   [Oct 01, 2012 at 10:00 PM]
I think if one lamp cycles, both will in unison. Both lamps will probably come on at the same time during a hot restrike since even if one lamp is ready before the other, it'll have to wait until the second is too to complete the circut. Are both lamps run by one ignitor?

That is clever, never thought of trying that.

Thanks! I tried a hot restrike and Mike is right you have to wait until both are cool enough to strike even though one might be ready first. I think the same thing will happen when they cycle, one bad lamp will make the other cycle-sorta like a bad RS fixture.

If I get another 100w HPS lamp I'll try running both on a 250w HPS ballast like what Jace mentioned above.

Both lamps share the same ignitor which is a MH one. Interestingly they actually made two lamp series HID ballasts a one point for MV and probe start MH. The other type was a lead/lag type which has a similar circuit as a tulamp preheat ballast.
