Inside the Westinghouse OV-14B
Here it is, the classic OV-14B! The ballast is enormous, even though it is only 175w. It has an interesting set up, to change from 120v to 240v and vice versa, you only have to change one of two pre wired connectors.

Shocked That ballast looks like a modern 250w or 400w one in size, and the OV14B looks like it's as long as my B2255 (3ft).

Size and weight of a 400 watt MV ballast and 3 feet long.....yep you got it right but narrower than a OV-25 flat bottom.... this pic will give you a good idea of sizes

BTW, the ballast may look like a single coil, but it is actually a 2 coil regulated output ballast, the other coil is beneath the one you see here, it is a stacked design. If I recall correctly, I think the top part is the secondary coil, the bottom is primary but will need to check again.

This doesn't look like it has a capacitor. Is this an EARLY HX ballast? I never knew they made them that early in time.
streetlight98   [Dec 27, 2011 at 10:54 PM]
Umm. They've been around since before the late 50's. My OV-10 has a HX ballast...

Actually this is a regulated output ballast, similar to a CWI. Yes it has capacitors, two in parallel. If you look at the pic closely, you can see them beneath the terminal block.

I've always thought this had a HX ballast lol, I see the caps too, it's a bit of a odd place to put them though. When did they start putting them in the sides instead?
LilCinnamon   [Dec 28, 2011 at 12:04 AM]
Probably starting with the OV-15. the sides is a more helpful place to put the caps because of the space,
Silverliner14B   [Dec 28, 2011 at 12:11 AM]
Westinghouse started putting the caps on the sides from around 1970 onwards.
GullWhiz   [Dec 28, 2011 at 12:57 AM]
Yeah the OV-12 and the OV-14B caps were hidden! The OV-12 caps were behind a ballast tray plate while the ballast was on the opposite side of the ballast tray!

Interesting, another thing I've noticed is that cap sizes shrunk over the years and that fixtures that used to have two or more caps now only have one cap.
GullWhiz   [Dec 28, 2011 at 01:23 AM]
Exactly Joe!!!
LilCinnamon   [Aug 25, 2012 at 05:17 AM]
Do these OV-14B's have the same reflector and refractor design as the OV-10?
GullWhiz   [Aug 25, 2012 at 12:09 PM]
Yes.....but some may have different pattern....like my OV-14B and OV-10 and my OV-12 which also uses same refractor
