Found one of these at Home Depot on clearance for 25$ a while back, bought it, and did this.
This is a Lights of America 42 watt "Fluorex" tall pack or was until I gutted it and installed a Fulham Workhorse 2 CFL ballast and a Philips Master Sox-E 18 watt low pressure sodium lamp. My inspiration for this was the Philips/Norelco Mini-Sox wallpack from the early 80's
You did a great job putting it together by the way! Very CLEVER! Suggestion, add some kind of mirrored reflective sheet as a reflector where the white reflector on your pack is....mine has the reflective reflector...
I recently acquired a NOS 18w LPS fixture. It is a ceiling mount security fixture made by Day-Brite, ironically now owned by Philips. It came with a Philips SOX 18w lamp, dated '94.
I just measured this with a UEI digital thermometer. The hottest part of the lamp (the slanted part of the tip at the bottom where there's a disc of mica holding the arc tube) gets up to 150°F (65°C). The main cylinder part only reaches about 105°F (40°C)
Tmcdllr, the ballast has 3 output wires (two red and one yellow) The two red wires are connected to one contact on the BY22D socket and the yellow wire goes to the other. It's similar to an instant-start fluorescent.
