What happened here did a snow plow hit it or did a street light walked away .

Copper theives??? Mad
basilicon89   [Jul 28, 2011 at 02:31 AM]
vandalism is correct. don't know how far that can get. the streetlighting is run on 69kV (yes, 69,000 volts) and run in series. Something I did not know but learned last weekend
streetlight98   [Jul 28, 2011 at 04:52 PM]
That's high voltage. Shocked Here the streetlights run off 120 volts.
joe_347V   [Jan 26, 2012 at 04:45 AM]
I guess Detroit is still using series wiring with a isolation ballast in the pole then? Shocked

Over here our lights are all multiple and run on 120, 240, 347, or 600v.

69 kV? Shocked I've never heard of that high a voltage being used for streetlighting...
mercuryvaporrocks   [Jan 26, 2012 at 12:41 PM]
The older mercury vapor streetlights in Pittsburgh had series wiring with isolation series ballasts in the pole bases also, they were probably 6 amp transformers which were standard for 400 watt mercury vapor streetlights.

I know Detroit does have older setups with series setups which uses very high voltage....but 69 kV? Question
A_lights   [Jan 26, 2012 at 02:53 PM]
That could explain why I see a Groups of them not working at night here and there, series is pointless and not as reliable as well as high voltage Shocked
