A strictly MUST have for ALL Electrical Lighting people!
Those, SERIOUSLY, are strictly must have!

ALL & I mean ALL linemen who works on streetlights have those, all those who works on electrical lines has those, all who works on residential wiring has those, those who experiment with electricity, SHOULD have those, those who installs new lights SHOULD have this.

This helps measure voltage, make sure of grounding continuity, find problems, shows electrical info & tests. & can even tell how much power a light draws!

I would be SHOCKED if you didn't have one!

I got the one on the left for 5 bucks....not the best quality and the battery that it came with was DEAD....but it is good for those who aren't workers. The one on the right is more higher quality and has a amp testing clamp some workers uses it, but the linemen I have seen who uses a meter has a more expensive than the one on the right and is over hundred of bucks!

Can you guys who has one tell me what you use it for and how you use it...

I use the continuity setting to test if something is grounded! I also use it to find problems with a magnetic ballast whether it's shorted or not.

Did you see mine?

I mainly use the ohmmeter setting to test incandescent light bulbs and fluorescent electrodes, but also any kind of coil (motor, ballast, transformer) or electronic components.

I can even test capacitors and transistors with mine!

I have a meter similar to Vince's and I mostly use it to measure continuity and voltage. I also have a plugin meter similar to a kill-a-watt that I mostly use for measuring AC current and wattage.

I have a kill-a-watt too...I had one..but it got fried by an ignitor and shows wrong voltage...but the good ol' Hawk bought me another one...

Now those kill-a-watt is all over the stores...I saw a bunch in Home Depot, Lowes, Radio Shack and even Bed Bath & Beyond! I guess people are trying to save energy and using them to measure how much power stuff uses!

I have DMM at home used for testing purpose and continuity test as well. For the clamp meter is usually use to measure high current in AC circuit. Now, I don't know how small current can it be read through the loop Confused

More important for me is the insulation tester and the plug and earth leakage tester. You can check outlets quickly for almost any fault, and wiring in the wall and underground for broken insulation.

As to clamp meters, I have 2, and around a half dozen digital multimeters.

Yes....so if you are doing stuff with electricty...then you MUST buy a good multimeter! It will help a lot and help save lives!

I have seen a Fluke 33 that was used to check a line for voltage, but the line was still energised to 11kV. The result was one bright flash and the electricians assistant went "Eish!", and the meter for some reason did not work well afterwards. I was there when they tried to claim under warranty, and the agent opened up the meter to show a very green PCB, and a case interior that was completely copper plated, except for the display area. The only parts that were salvageable were the LCD display, the battery and the 20A fuse on the current shunt. BTW it was not me that did that, I was there to collect a very expensive Weller SMD tip, it cost me the equivalent of $100, in the 1990's, but was worth it every day.

Reminder for everyone.........get a multimeter.....if you guys want the ones on the left....I can pick it up for you guys....Just pay the cost of meter (its cheap) a little bit of money for my troubles to pick up an affordable meter and gas) and shipping!

The ones on the left now comes with a backlight...a cool orange color backlight...BRIGHT!!!! Just PM me....

Bought a cheap one recently with a blue backlight. It actually is useful to have the backlight at times.

i have a copy of the one on the left. i'm using it to help my troubleshoot my Westie ballast's GE capacitor.

I have an exact copy of the one on the left I got it for *free at Harbor Freight with a coupon and another purchase
I have a better auto-ranging multimeter meter though I only wanted it for the leads + it was free and it was the only good thing that was free on that day
