Here's the meter part of the setup. I started with bare trusses. I installed the OSB board, the Tyvek and the laths in order to reproduce an unfinished exterior wall. Behind that wall there's a piece of OSB board that supports a 100A main panel.
Everything here has been install respecting the Canadian Electrical Code. I still need to run #2 gauge wire from the meter socket to the panel. But the wires going from the meter to the entrance cap are installed!
Technically yes, 100A services are obsolete, although some small independant buildings (like summer cottages) may not need more than 100A. Such small services are getting rarer though.
Here 60A is a common rating, if you need bigger then you move to a 100A 3 phase setup, about the biggest domestic supply. If you have a prepayment meter the supply is 40A max.
Here most contractors install a 200A single phase service, to avoid calculations for the charge. It's also the biggest service you don't have a install a current transformer with.
