2002 GE M-250R2 FCO
This is a Connecticut Power & Light fixture that had been sitting in someone's garage for the past decade-and-a-half. It is used, but appears to only been in service a few months if that. It cleaned up really nicely with just a wet paper towel and relatively little scrubbing. Only thing wrong with it was the glass missing and the fact that the door pops open at the drop of a hat. Damn door will NOT stay closed with a lens in the door if it gets jolted around a bit. Without a lens it stays closed but is still easy to open.

That's how my 70 watt HPS M250R2 is. I think the housing got dented in at the ends during shipping, pushing the front of the door forward causing the latch to not engage very tightly. The glass refractor was broken when I got it too.

I know a lot of the M-250R2s from the early 2000s had this issue. Tony said he uses a ziptie on the lights he services with a loose-fitting latch. If I install this someday that's what I would probably do, though I'm not sure where to attach the ziptie to keep it from coming off. Since the front of the latch is tapered toward the back of the latch, I'd expect the ziptie to just slide down and come off if the latch was hit or something.

After playing around with the reflector I was able to make the door close a little better. Still sorta loose but not as severe as it was. It will not stay closed with the glass unlike before, where it would little pop open if you so much as tapped the light. Now it will only open if you try to open it but it requires very little effort. I could still see it opening on its own if it's on a long arm and it's windy. If the light vibrated enough on the end of the arm the latch would probably pop open. The 1992 M-250R2 on the other hand latches very securely.

If hinge keepers were standard on all lights, that would eliminate the issue of doors flying off. I wonder why nobody ever made that a standard feature. The extra cost can't be that much higher.

To be honest, the manufacturer doesn't want the door to not accidentally fall off because having fixtures loose doors opens a window of opportunity to sell replacement parts or replacement fixtures. I've noticed that cobraheads have gotten easier to open over the years. could be for convenience of the lineman but it's probably to sell more parts. AEL is the only one who offers a hinge keeper. GE stopped after they ended the M-250R/M-400 and westinghouse never offered one as far as I know, though some of Westy's doors are ridiculously hard to remove. My OV-15's door does not want to come off ever. I'm afraid of breaking something when I try to remove it. though I suppose that's a good thing since the door won't fall off if it accidentally opens up. But on the other hand, the door could bind at the hinges and something might break and the door would fall off anyway.

Hmm, I believe the Powerlites always had hinge keepers but I've noticed that one of the hinge keeping screws on my B2255 was missing. All of my Powerlites also latch pretty well but they're also older lights. My OVF dosen't have a hinge keeper but it does latch pretty tightly.
