The fixtures are HPS OVF's. A few of them are already lit at night. Streetsigns have been installed on the arms again. The font at Orenda and Dixie is a little different because they never had big rectangular signs to begin with.

Wow, they actually preserved the old signs and didn't lose them, that's responsible lol. I guess those also got mounted the old style with the two vertical bars.

Sign design is another interest of mine. I know we made changes to the font size over the years, I guess a slightly different font is now used. Some rare projects seem to use a random font, I think because the contractor sourced the signs independently.

Funny they double lit the private "Rogers" entrance.

The font is pretty nice though. I think the letters were not as bold if i remember right. I was hoping they would use FCO AE 125s instead of OVFs

I never really payed attention to the signage. 2007 and so on it seemed the large signs were being put on all the streets.

Given your interest in sign design, do you know the names of the fonts typically used for signs?

Typically, most commonly a special font actually called "Highway" is used. I've recognized it on provincialy managed roads in Canada. I cannot seem to identify what the font is in my city, or in Toronto. I really want to know!

Hmm interesting. The road signs here typically use FHWA fonts but there's this newer font some places used called Cleanview or Clearview or something like that. I don't know if that's the professional name or just the nickname for it. The FHWA fonts were introduced because they're supposedly optimized for easy reading while in motion. Other fonts can be harder to read while whizzing by at 60+ MPH lol.

Yep Highway is the FHWA font.

Clearview you say... turns out you helped me discover what toronto uses! I'm still stumped about Brampton, seems to be a varient of various Highway Gothic font.

Ah I've always wondered what the typical font family used by the FHWA was. I have the FHWA fonts (not Clearview though) on my computer but they have different names. Apparently the MUTCD essentially banned Clearview at the beginning of this year. Obviously that doesn't apply to Canada though, which is why you still see it used. RIDOT still uses the older "highway" fonts.

The MTO also a couple of Clearview test signs on the QEW and the 401 that were installed during 2009-2010 but they haven't installed any since so I guess they switched back to FHWA. Interestingly they seem to have done a few using the thinner Type E vs the Type E modified that's normally used.

York Region used to use FHWA Type D in all caps but I've noticed them using mixed case Clearview in some newer signs. Mississauga uses a variant of Helvetica but some Arial signs have snuck in lol. Brampton also appears to use a variant of Helvetica.
