GE BT37 400W merc! I know what you're thinking. "Wow this thing must be OLD!" Nope, it's a modern lamp! It's marked (Hg) so it's from the past 10 years. Something must be loose inside there wearing off the phosphors. I assume this still works but maybe not. Only one way to find out. :-D I'll bring the M-400 in the house and put a cord on it to test these 400W lamps when I get the chance. Keywords: Lamps

Ahh, I heard that GE still kept making BT mercury bulbs as a special order even years after they switched to ED. The way that the phosphor is scratched out on the crown of the bulb make it's look like a vintage Bonusline cleartop. Razz

Yeah at first i thought it was a sloppy cleartop lamp but nope, it's supposed to be fully coated. Laughing Yeah Joe M said that for some reason the BT shape was always available in the 400W lamps. They offered the BT28 shape for a while but after 1965-ish, they never made a single BT 25 ever again. I wonder why the manufacturers were hatin' on the BT25s so badly. Westinghouse was the only one who was BT all the way till the end. Cool

Did you ever try this, and if so does it work/ how bright is it?

It works. I only lit it briefly to test it so I don't know how bright it is, but it only has a little blackening on the ends so probably almost new.

I had tested this on the M-400 a while back. It does work fine and the arc tube is mostly clear. Through a refractor it sorta looks like a cleartop with some /DX rays and some clear MV rays hitting the refractor in certain spots. Looking at the bare lamp from far away, it just gives the effect of a very light /DX coating. The lamp starts pinkish but also purple because it's both coated and uncoated lol.

When we were using GE MV lamps, they had very thin coatings. They don't stay bright very long. We would get about a year and they looked so dim you would think wow that lamp has to be 10 years old. I'm so glad we went to Eye and Sylvania.

Ah I never knew that about the GE mercs. I knew they had cycling issues and would randomly die after a couple months but didn't know they dimmed faster than other brands. Wow. Are their HPS lamps still decent or are they bad too?

Yeah, their mv and mh lamps are by far the crappiest lamps on the market. The hps lamps are decent.
