I picked this starter kit up at home depot for $50 and I must say it works really well! To bad the extra bulbs are back ordered online due to high demand..
I can individually control the bulbs and dim them full range with my Samsung glaxy note 2 via wifi, also can set up a remote login to control them if I'm away from home
They can be programmed to come on as well, preset modes can be activated in the app with one click

I installed these 2 in the lamps in the TV room since sometimes you want to turn the lights on without getting up Razz they are wifi controlled so an ipod touch would work fine
streetlight98   [Dec 22, 2013 at 02:00 PM]
i don't have an ipod touch either. Razz I have a laptop but if i have to get up to get my laptop i might as well just go to the switch on the wall instead lol.

Heh, i guess you could always use your phone if its a Android.

Yeah...seems to me something voice-activated would be nice, like "Turn the lights in the master bathroom on" but I guess it could misinterpret those key phrases in normal conversation though...but at least it wouldn't require a smartphone. But, I'm just fine with getting up off the couch to turn on a table lamp or light switch on the wall just like normal.
A voice-controlled start/killswitch for my generator would be nice...just point the remote out the window next to my bed, etc. Very Happy

The problem I have with voice activated stuff is that a lot of voice recognition systems aren't that accurate and you can't really silently turn on the bulb. I guess a bulb that works with both would be ideal.

I think I've seen another system that included a basic on/off remote for those who didn't have a phone but for users with a phone it offered more advanced features.

LOL yeah...the prowlers are hiding in the bushes, and the homeowner says, "Turn on the porch light"! Laughing They're like, "We're busted"! Laughing
I know someone who has an auto-start thing for their generator; when their batteries run low it starts and runs till they're optimally charged. I think they also have it programmed to NOT come on at night so it won't wake anyone up, annoy the neighbors, etc. That would be nice...I wouldn't mind it kicking on at 3Am as long as it's fairly quiet (My Isuzu diesel is pretty loud and vibrates parts of the house but it's room is attached to my house and isn't soundproofed or anything.
streetlight98   [Dec 23, 2013 at 02:02 AM]
how about installing a chip in your brain that sends a wireless signal to the lamp to control it, eh? Razz Laughing

one thing i've wondered would be an older sibling playing pranks on a younger sibling in another room my playing with the lights via his phone lol.

Are you inferring you want to try that one on your brother? I'd love to see a YouTube video of that...what about your parents?
joe_347V   [Dec 23, 2013 at 02:28 AM]
Don't need fancy light bulbs to use that prank in my house. The light switch for one of my bathrooms is located outside. Razz
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Dec 24, 2013 at 12:42 AM]
Laughing I can only imagine how that would go over!
joe_347V   [Jan 19, 2014 at 02:47 AM]
Found two extra bulbs for this at Restore today, think I might have to buy the starter kit now. Razz

The two bulbs work fine on regular switches even without the base station in range though.

I went Restoring a couple weeks ago at that same Restore in Paso Robles, CA but didn't buy anything personally...I would've bought that GTE Sylvania F20T12 350 blacklight still in the sleeve but not for 12 bucks...although we did find some F96T12 slimline ballasts which we bought. (I went with someone else).
joe_347V   [Jan 23, 2014 at 02:51 AM]
I found some F40T12/CW/1200mm tubes at Restore once. They're electrically the same as regular F40 tubes but are 1200mm long metric sized instead of being 48" long.
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Jan 23, 2014 at 03:29 AM]
How long is that in inches? I'm now familiar with the metric system and how it converts to ours very well.
joe_347V   [Jan 23, 2014 at 04:55 AM]
Just shy of of four feet, don't know much about them though as F40 lumes here are designed for four foot lamps.
streetlight98   [Jan 23, 2014 at 07:33 PM]
yeah i googled it and it's 47.2441" I guess with those lamps you could use standard F40T12 lamps with bi-pin plunger sockets in a standard-length fixture? Since I know HO and slimline lamps are shorter than bi-pin...
joe_347V   [Jan 24, 2014 at 01:21 AM]
Might be a tight fit though since I know plunger holders need around a extra inch or half to work properly.
A_lights   [Jan 26, 2014 at 10:22 PM]
Wow that's odd! Did you pick one up?
joe_347V   [Jan 26, 2014 at 10:35 PM]
No, I didn't Neutral Maybe if they're still there the next time I'm at that Restore.
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Jan 28, 2014 at 12:23 AM]
I was totally thinking of your light switch outside the bathroom door this weekend, Joe...at someone's house they're adding a bathroom (well moving it closer to their kitchen so plumbing can be next to other plumbing). Since it was an addition to the house and intended to be an entryway the light switch is outside the bathroom and turns on a jelly-jar porch light fixture. Also the door into the bathroom was an exterior one with a window and there was another one to the outside...also with a window. I guess the idea is that you don't have to walk all the way through the house if you're outside doing something...and their breaker box was in there...making me realize I'm not the only house with that feature...mine's in there as well! Laughing
