"Old School" Fixture (Sorta) Converted to 3 Lamp
The lampholder brackets in this had the space for an extra lamp, so I added the sockets and stuck in a lamp...I don't have a ballast for it yet though and I'm seeing if I like it...
Lamps shown are (lit) GE Chroma 50 lamps and (unlit) a GE Ecolux 3500K F32T8 made in Canada.
I've since stuck a 1979 warm white Mainlighter in that space and I daresay with the third lamp this light is now even more of an awkward PITA to relamp (removing this light from it's previous location was a blast (if you can sense the sarcasm). To get to the bottom lamp in the pic the top two must first be removed...

yeah sounds like it's a tight fit, especallicaly if 3T12s were used.

I have an cheap shoplight fixture that had the lamps spaced pretty tight too, it's better now that I swapped out the original LPF T12 ballast with a Sylvania F32T8 ballast. It's still in use and lights the cold room in the basement.

Yeah, T8s seem better in cold, although they still take awhile to warm up (3500K Ecolux anyway)....
What do you guys think of this "Mod"? Should I put in a T8 or T12 ballast?
streetlight98   [Apr 06, 2013 at 01:27 AM]
i say keep it T12 but T8 may be better if it's too crammed. yeah i've noticed the GE cool white T8s at my school start off at like 70% brightness when first switched on then they warm up like a CFL, but it's only noticeable if one set of lights is off and the other has been on and then both are turned on. you'll see the jsut turned on set is a tad dimmer. the ballasts are programmed start at my school with little blackening and VERY few EOL lamps. only a couple in the whole school i've noticed.

I've noticed that Sylvania and the Alto II Philips T8s tend to start out dim in the centre and warm up slowly.

the ge ecoluxes at my school are just dim altogether at first. i used to think it was just all in my head but when you turn on one set of lights and wait then turn on the other, you notice the difference. i've noticed that more places are using GE fluorescents over Philips and Sylvania. my school has a mix of GE eco luxes and sylvania ecologic lamps.

The 4100K Sylvania Octron T8s start out dim in the middle then warm up...their cool white plus F40T12s do that too. I had a pair running in a cheap Lithiona shoplight with one of those weird fake "ballasts" and even a pair of cr@ppy 34w Watt-Misers start better initially...I need to see how long those will take to stop striating though; the Sylvanias would fully warm up after a few minutes. The Ecolux T8s in the other light on that switch just light dimly then brighten up after a few minutes.

I've got this thing fully converted as of now, permanently installed in my garage, with three /765 Octrons.
