The Other Non-Working fixture
This one is inline with the other fixture with the mismatched sockets near the pullchain light. this one is a different style. It seems that every single light seems to be a slightly different style. you can see the makeshift drop ceiling that was put in and the water damage done to it. the lights had troffer lenses under them cut to size but my uncle ripped them down. the whole ceiling has to come down to inspect the plumbing and electrical lines. the fixture is held in by NAILS! you can see the nails poking out of the so-called drop ceiling holding up the light. This one has blackened tubes and they appear to also be lifelines looking the the endcaps, though i couldn't see the etches on most of the lamps.

The reason for the messed up looking pic is becuase it came out really dark so i "autocorrected" it and it made it a black and white picture... looks almost like a period correct pixture for when this sort of thing was common (wood grid ceiling with wood wall paneling and recessed lights with lenses). the only thing that ruins it is the blue light coming from outside as dusk arrived.

Is that a chunk missing on the right?
FGS   [Apr 01, 2013 at 08:46 PM]
Pic looks spooky! Lol! Laughing
streetlight98   [Apr 01, 2013 at 08:53 PM]
@ Joe; it's not a chunk of the fixture missing...i don't think. all the fixtures are in good shape physically besides some rusting. i think that's a piece of wood that's broken...

@ Felipe; yeah i was like "huh?" when this pic turned out the way it did lol. the house was built in the 30s and relocated a few hundred yards when they built Interstate 295 in the 60s. this house is right near where the interstate ends on I-95 in Attleboro. i'd guess they had to repour the foundation but i wonder how they moved the whole house. Shocked they have a stained glass hanging light too that they're getting rid of- i get that too. I'll probably install one of those huge globe shaped incandescent lamps that seem to have been common in those huge fixtures.

Are you getting these fixtures soon or something? Or relamping them?
streetlight98   [Apr 02, 2013 at 01:33 AM]
did you check the off topic topic yet? Razz these are at me aunt and uncle's new house. they haven't moved in yet as the place needs rennovations big time! these lights are getting the boot and i'm getting them. i think there are some electrical connection issues though and not fixture issues since there's two switches in the room, one controls the light that works and i'm guessing the other is supposed to control the other two that don't work. there's water damage to the redneck drop ceiling and there's mold so my uncle's going to rip the whole thing down. There's actually a window from the room into the basement that's made from a troffer lens. this fixture had a troffer lens under it too but my uncle had already ripped it out. he left the troffer lens over the other out light though.

Interesting! Be sure to save these and any other interesting florescent and HID lights in this house...
streetlight98   [Apr 02, 2013 at 08:05 PM]
no HID here. that was the first thing i looked for around the yard of the house lol. there's a shed but i don't think it has power since there's not ouside light on it and i don't see any conduit entrance. there's a cool stained glass hanging light that will be removed though and i called dibs on that lol. I have no clue what the hell i'll do with that though lol. She said it wa smade by a deaf person whot was physically disabled. pretty cool story behind the light. I wonder if my parents would let me install it somewhere, though I'd want it when i move out in a few years...
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Apr 03, 2013 at 02:00 AM]
Yeah, and be sure to save those preheat florescents from the landfill! Can you get photos of this stained-glass light?
streetlight98   [Apr 03, 2013 at 02:08 AM]
i didn't take a pic of it but when i get a chance I'll try to get one. probably won't be for a while though. i think it looks sorta like this
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Apr 03, 2013 at 02:13 AM]
Wow cool! I'm assuming next time you go back is when they start gutting the basement and it's associated preheat F40 fixtures?
streetlight98   [Apr 03, 2013 at 02:24 AM]
no probably not until it's done. i'm not involved in the rennovations at all. i think/hope they'll be setting the fixtures aside for me. it depends on when the next time i'm invited is. i can't invite myself over and they're not moving in until the remod is done so i don't think they'll be having guests over until then either.
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Apr 03, 2013 at 02:29 AM]
Yeah I know what you mean...
I'm really familiar with house construction/rennovation (remember me talking about the vapor barrier and insulation in your laundry room?) so I would be involved...being involved with renovations has gotten me my three vintage florescent fixtures...
streetlight98   [Apr 03, 2013 at 02:36 AM]
I'd love to be involved in the rennovation but they've already got people. the good news is the people are family members to my aunt, so not total strangers. i don't know them well though. well, i trust that my aunt will save them for me if they get taken down. I sure hope so since i have a demand for them now lol.
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Apr 03, 2013 at 02:39 AM]
Yeah now the push is on... Laughing
At some point in the future (AKA a few years down the road when I have my own place) I might be interested in one of these...but that would only work if you had an extra one sitting around that was still for sale...
streetlight98   [Apr 19, 2013 at 02:24 PM]
UPDATE: Okay, well the redneck grid ceiling has been ripped down since all the electrical connections to the house come from the breaker box in this "room" in the basement. Apparently the lights were suspened by chains are weren't just laying up there (thankfully) so they are all still up without the suspended ceiling. The electrican is going to update anything not to code and unsafe and my uncle will do all the res tof the electrical work. I'm not sure if myself or my uncle will be removing the lights. I'm hoping i can go over and do it myself but my aunt and uncle confirmed that I'll be getting all the lights with the lamps and all. I'm betting half the lamps actualy work but the fixtures are probably just not connected to power. There's a switch that does nothing that probably controlls this light and this one. though the tubes in the linked light look pretty used up...

I wonder if this one has a provision for a third lamp in the middle since the pace is so large. I'd keep it two lamp though...
joe_347V   [Apr 20, 2013 at 03:35 AM]
Hmm, I wonder if they're going to put in a proper drop ceiling with troffers or drywall with recessed lighting both of which I've seen in basements.
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Apr 21, 2013 at 03:46 AM]
Personally I'd just do a drywall ceiling and 2XF32T8 wraps or shoplights if the basement is going to be left unfinished.
As for the switch that does nothing, could it be that it was disconnected when a WALL was built OVER that light you linked to? Laughing
joe_347V   [Apr 21, 2013 at 05:40 AM]
One major problem with drywall, most basements need access in the ceiling to adjust the dampers on the ductworks. Shut off valves for outdoor spigots are often in the ceiling too. Also it makes running wiring and repairing plumbing at lot easier.
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Apr 21, 2013 at 04:07 PM]
You are right about that come to think of it...
streetlight98   [Aug 31, 2013 at 04:04 PM]
Well, this fixture appears to be a WWII era fixture. Shocked Very Happy see here. I tried to follow the supply cord but i kept loosing track of it. I THINK it's still connected but not sure. There were a bunch of cut and dangling wires that the electrician replaced to get the rest of the house up to code. The basment will be entirely rewired with "regular lights" instead of fluorescents or pull chains my uncle told me. you can see the ceiling tiles were all ripped out since they were all moldy and the electrician needed acess to the wires for upstairs. the basement will be redone later like a said before. In the new pic theres a philips lamp and a GE. My uncle had switched around the lamps trying to get the fixtures to work but no luck. I think the starters are probably bad.
