Uh-Oh, do you think that's tar?
seems like a silly question, considering the ballast is on the other side, but could leaked tar from the ballast cause that dark stain on the reflector? i hope not... :-( this one has a broken socket and has no lamps though it has starters jammed in. I think my uncle said this one wasn't hooked up.

I don't think it should unless there's a hole in the reflector.
streetlight98   [Apr 01, 2013 at 08:46 PM]
yeah i don't see a hole. do you think the heat of the tar could have wore off the paint on it? I'm really wondering what that stain is lol.
joe_347V   [Apr 01, 2013 at 11:29 PM]
Hmm, come to think of it, heat marks are possible but they're usually yellow instead of black.

aww man. I don't think i want to open this fixture when i get it. Sad if there is tar, can it just be sanded off? if the tar leaked does that mean there is PCBs mixed in with the tar or are they like oil and water (don't mix but stay separate)?

I don't know but I doubt that's tar...just open it carefully while wearing rubber gloves...if it's tar it likely had 34w lamps at some point (and/or has a bad ballast). Are you getting all these fixtures?
streetlight98   [Apr 02, 2013 at 01:36 AM]
i hope so. I don't know what i'll do with them but i don't have the heart to see them trashed and i think my mom can see that, but she said some of ym lights are getting put in the shed (which means i'll pretty much never see them. Rolling Eyes I'll probably put these in the shed until i restore them all one by one. (well after that they'll still probably be in the shed lol). Joe is getting one of the lights if he decides he wants to so i'll have four F40 lights and one f20 light.

LOL if shipping to Alaska weren't so difficult I'd ask for one or more of these! Laughing Especially F40 preheaters! Shocked
joe_347V   [Apr 02, 2013 at 06:16 AM]
I think if I do get one, it might have to go in the garage and replace a T8 reflector light since that's the only place I have room to install it unless I keep it as a loose fixture. I'll install that preheat ballast I got in it though so it'll stay preheat.

Good idea! What are you planning to use for lamps? As weird as it might sound IMO Altos with their green endcaps would look cool in there...although if for some miraculous reason I buy one from Mike at some point in the future it'll likely get warm white Mainlighters or Norelco F40CWs...
streetlight98   [Aug 31, 2013 at 03:46 PM]
Okay, well this one isn't hooked up. I checked yesterday with a flashlight and the black cloth or rubber cord coming out of it is cut. The stain is rust apparently...
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Aug 31, 2013 at 04:54 PM]
Does it mean you could get this one if it isn't even hooked up? It might be disconnected if it has a bad ballast, but for now if you don't have a proper preheat ballast I suppose as an interim you could convert it to RS or T8 until you find a nice preheat ballast to stick in there. I'd still leave the dead starters in there in the meantime for a nice vintage look until you get it "Preheated" again.

This fixture is for Joe so if it has a bad ballast (which i don't think it does) he said to ship it to him with no ballast since he's got a replacement. If any other fixture has a bad ballast and this fixure has a good one, i'll swap the ballasts and leave this one empty. no ballast is cheaper to ship and he had a spare ballast. the socket it broken but it can be replaced.

Yeah, I have a NOS Universal two-lamp F40 preheat ballast I can stick in this. I recently found some nice black GE sockets that would look good in this. I'll reuse the old starter blocks or sockets though.
