New project...Signal #12 added to the collection
I needed another down-and-dirty restoration project so I bought and picked up this Crouse Hinds Type D four way from a friend and fellow collector about a half hour from me. It needs alot of work...it's a hodgepodge of parts and different screw sizes, some Type D parts, some Type DT parts, glass and aluminum reflectors, 9 original lenses, and 3 various brands, but physically its in pretty good shape. It has an ID tag that was common on signals of the late 1930s and early 40s which is being soaked in paint remover...it was painted over while still attached to the signal. It's also missing some door latches I will need to find more.

The exterior got a quick shot of some rattle-can green paint. The visors were hacked up by the city and 4 sets of brand new visors will be made to exact spec by a buddy of mine out in Colorado.

The signal is now all in pieces...the result will be a beautiful restored antique four way, professionally stripped and powdercoated in shining federal yellow throughout. The ID tag will be repainted black with silver letters accenting the information on it. The acorn nuts will either be painted or replaced with chrome...

It's gonna be a big project....but I haven't had a deep traffic signal restoration in a while!
Stay tuned for more pictures!

Seeing the signal in this condition reminds me of the block signals the TTC uses for its Scarborough RT and subway system. Except they were painted black, had the 3m or dialight beam, and they could either have another set, with the white and orange indicator
Confused

The TTC signals are quite old too with most dating back to when the subway was built. They are still incandescent with the orignal glass fresnel lenses too.

Anyway, I've seen at least two types in use, the one with only G-Y-R lamps used along the tracks and the taller with 6+ lamps used at crossovers.

I think their signals are being either replaced with a different type. Their approximately 50 years old. They are still safe, but they are pretty old and they need to be sure. Very Happy

Yeah, on the YUS they're planning to replace everything with a ATC system that dosen't need the old wayside signals anymore. Hopefully when they're done I won't be late due to signal problems at Bloor station weekly. Rolling Eyes Razz

Yep. That's why there's a cancellation down to union. They even said they will be able to add more trains once it's done.

Btw have you seen their new Toronto rockets? Inside, their fluorescent fixtures are on the ceiling like the Gloucesters, instead of the H-series, as the lights glow through the map or posters, or under the air conditioning, still fluorescent. Wink

Yeah, thats what they said too. Unfortunately even after they upgrade the signals TTC will have to upgrade the crossovers at Finch and Downsview as well as shorten the time the train stays at Bloor before they can run more trains. The crossovers are more key as if you ever taken the train during rush hour, it will always wait before Finch for the trains in front to turn back.

Yeah, I been the on new TR trains quite a few times now, and yeah the lights reminds me of the old M-1 trains which also had similar lighting. Its funny how long the H series RT-75 design lasted too, all of the TTC trains from the H-1 to the T-1 are more or less based off that design (aside from the wider doors the T-1 has a similar body to the H-5 and H-6 trains) .

Yes they do. H5 5796 and the H6s end caps on the top are the same sort of, as 5796 became a T1 mockup (prototype). The M1s seemed to keep the particular 2 whistle, instead of the automatic door chime with the flashing incandescent (LED on Toronto rockets) orange warning light near the doors.
joe_347V   [Oct 06, 2013 at 07:40 PM]
Yeah, I never really did figure out why the M1s never got chimes and lights. They were retired around the same time as the H1 trains and those got chimes and lights for some reason.

As for 5796, I only ever got to ride it once. Neutral
curtdjdj   [Oct 06, 2013 at 08:55 PM]
Your lucky! All the H5s and earlier series have retired. All that's left are the H6s, T1s and TRs.
joe_347V   [Oct 06, 2013 at 11:38 PM]
Yeah, I have some pics of the H5 train on its last run back in June. As for the H4, I been on it before and there's a pic on the interior in my gallery but I wasn't on its last run. I'm guessing the H6 will be going soon too.

Yes. Early 2014.
