M-250 R2 getting installed to the pole. I want this guy's job! xD I will get it eventually... xD But anyway, here is one of the linemen tightening the slipfitter on the M-250 R2 for it to be installed over the road. After he tightened the slipfitter he also pushed the socket all the way back (I dunno why) and then installed the lamp and photocell then put the door on. This M-250 R2 now lights the road and is nicely installed, I watched the whole thing, it was cool to watch them put up a new streetlight. (with a whole new pole) There were three trucks, A crane truck for the pole, and a truck that stored things. There was a bucket truck as well with lots of new cobraheads in it for replacements, I dunno why it was there I guess one of the three workers were driving it and were on the job of replacing streetlights, even though there were no OLD streetlights in the bucket truck though. I hope they used more than that nut driver to tighten the cobra on. Shocked I see what looks to be a torque wrench sticking out of his tool bag, did he use that?

We normally install the pole without the fixture then go up in the bucket and install the fixture afterwards.

He used some ratchet wrench thingy too, I forget what he was doing when taking the picture.. I think he was tightening the slipfitter.

He way have used what's called a torque wrench. With that tool you can tight bolts at a specific value (I'm not sure how many lbs/ft though...)

Here RIDOT/NGrid installs the pole first and then the light like Tony described. They don't always install the lights the same day as the pole though.

The reason he put the socket all the way back is because it's a 250 watt......you can't install a 250 watt HPS lamp in a small reflector if the socket was in the middle!!!! the 250 watt HPS lamp are same length as a 400 watt MV lamp.....

Use smaller fixtures on 250 watt HPS, less flexibility of socket adjusting, use it in medium fixtures, more flexibility....the 250 watt HPS lamps were originally designed to be in medium sized fixtures...not the small ones...

The socket on this fixture was already adjusted to fit a 250 watt lamp, he just pushed it all the way in. Well I am not sure exactly. I don't think GE would put the socket in a 250 watt fixture where a 250 watt lamp wouldn't fit. I think he just put the socket all the way in that little bulge in the back as far as it could go.

GE just makes the fixtures and Puts them together....they don't adjust, it's a waste of the factory time.....GE just makes me had have installer to do the rest.....the socket has to go all the way for the lamp to fit in reflector....GE does not go...oh it's a 250 watt...let's change it.....they just put in the socket mount assmebly and provides instructions for socket adjusting......they dont have time or money to do extra details....plus sockets can move from shipping and transport, small fixtures can not fit a size of the lamp unless it's all the way back...

When did 250w HPS in small fixtures become popular anyways, a lot of installs here, still used medium fixtures. In fact I think we use small fixtures only as spot replacements.

@ Jace; they have to adjust the socket for proper distribution. If the customer orders type II distribution, that can't install the socket at the Type III position. I think the M-250R2 has a special reflector for the 250W lamps that allows the the socket to go back further.
