Preheat #2
This one is the ONLY one out of the three that lights the lamps good. And it's only the right lamp that lights. The left one doesn't glow at all and the starter doesn't click either, so it's probably dead. Seems there are a lot of old fluorescents in my family. O_O

Yeah, I've noticed that too. Razz I wonder if they got them when the place they worked at was changing the lights to rapid start or mercury highbays.

yeah. These came from his friend who worked at Mass Electric a long while back. My grandpa got his T17 and RS F40 lights from my great-grandpa, who worked at Narragansett Electric. Hope to eventually get some of the fluorescents that my family members have. Maybe replace them with newer lights. These seem to be in good condition despite the paint being worn out and lots of dirt/dust on them. These are in a garage versus a basement, though I was told there are even MORE of these in the basement. Very Happy

Shocked You should stock up on F40T12s to run them then...they might get banned in a few months (or at least the lower CRI ones).

I have good news! I can fix these! Very Happy A dead lamp is when the lamp stobes correct? And a dead starter is when the lamp glows at the ends? What about when nothing happens at all? By the looks I'll need five lamp and three starters. My cousin's grandmother said the "parts" needed to fix these are probably either in the garage (which they're not) or in the basement. She said there are few of these in the basement too but she doesn't know if they all work since she doesn't really pay attention.

There's a box of Alto F32T8 lamps and three modern F32T8 plastic shoplites that were supposed to replace the other three preheats in the garage but only one was replaced before my cousin's grandfather became ill. The other preheat i think died. there was a keyless socket attatched to a JB on the wall for the longest time with I THINK a 100W lamp. My uncle took down the old preheat and incandescent a couple years before and put up the F32. He never asked my uncle to do the rest though and they were never changed out. I plan to fix them the next time i see them and hopefully aquire them when i get my own place.

Yep if it's strobing it's dead, just don't let them strobe for too long though since the starter will get stuck and eventually cook the ballast. Anyways if you need to replace any ballasts you should use those F40 "tulamp" ballasts to keep it preheat. They pop up occasionally on eBay but I think some of the members on LG have spares that you can probably buy.

Oh and make sure no F32T8s and F34s get near this, unless you want freshly baked ballast. Razz

Ehh I'm the only candidate to service these lol. What about the ones with dead starters and lamps? Will the ballast fry? One has that problem and the pull-chain switch is too short for me to reach to disconnect it. I was able to sucessfully stop one that has bad lamps but good starters The reason they're probably all dead is because they were left on all winter last year. Shocked The F32T8 was shut off though via pull chain. Thankfully the preheat ballasts are still good surprisingly. It was probably one of my little cousins. Rolling Eyes

No one but them really goes in the garage. My cousins' grandfather was the only one that went in there. It was his tractor's home and his workshop. He built the garage in the 60s and these preheats came from elsewhere. I'm not sure if they were leftovers from one of his friend's projects (his friend was a contractor at the time) or if they were removed by his friend and given to him used. Either way the lights are OLD and I can't wait to get 'em some day and repaint them. The reflectors have some surface rust from a roof leak over a decade ago that was repaired.

I hope spare lamps and starters are in their basement, that way i can repair them the next time I'm over there (which may not be for awhile). Otherwise i'll have to repair them the time after the next time i see them so i can buy the parts myself. I'd rather use their parts is they have any sicne they're older and will appreicate the preheat ballast more lol.

Cool preheater! Smile These are becoming increasingly hard to find...

Thanks! Yeah most lights i see are rapid starts so it was a treat to see three of these in my cousin's grandparents' garage. Too bad only one of six lamps work.
